Here's What You Didn't See on Your Favorite TV Show
Behind The Scenes
We all have our favorite television shows that we refuse to miss every week. Although, very few of us consider what goes on behind the scenes. We connect with the characters lives, yet somehow know very little about the real action we are missing behind the scenes. For any of you who have wondered what really goes on behind the scenes, please read on. You may find yourself contemplating just how different the shows you love today could have been if network performance was not considered.
For instance, the highly watched show Bob’s Burgers is far different than what was originally pitched. Had it been accepted as it were, your favorite television show would have the Belcher family as cannibals running a family restaurant. Luckily, the network considered the interest of the public and chose to slightly alter the show. This was a great decision, because it is a much-loved show still today. If that caught you off guard, you will certainly be amazed to learn that some shows have created languages to help the show seem more authentic. There are also shows that have originally planned to kill off characters that ultimately make the show stand out today.
Behind The Scenes
If we glimpse even further behind the scenes; then we find the feuds, hidden onscreen pregnancies, and just plain nastiness of some of our favorite characters. If you were a fan of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air in the 90s, you may have wondered why they replaced the star playing Aunt Viv. I certainly found myself wondering, but would have never guessed it was a feud between a few of the leading roles that would change the character mid season. However, this decision was not actually harmful to one of the most beloved shows of my youth. We can only imagine what the show would have been like without the Fresh Prince himself.
History
It is hard to believe that some of the longest running shows were flops initially, but this is the case for a few of our family favorites in the late 80s and early 90s. It is a bit comical that it took a letter from a family activist complaining about the subject matter and anti-family values of the show to essentially make it a hit. Just think, had the letter writing campaign against Married with Children not been initiated, the show would have not become the longest running show in Fox’s history.
Topics
When we consider what is really necessary to make our favorite shows enjoyable, we seldom consider how hard it is to create content that is entertaining, educational, and relatable. Yet, we can see many of these shows excel in regards to the challenges of necessary themes meant to help the public grow in awareness and acceptance in reference to daily life. Oftentimes, these shows discuss factors in society we often avoid; such as, eating disorders, bullying, alcoholism, and so much more. Even though television shows have changed throughout the years, it is still easy to find the message written into the script.
Conclusion
We may not get to see everything that goes on behind the scenes of our favorite shows. However, in the end, this is often a good thing. We are allowed to love the characters for who they are, instead of who they were behind the scenes. Granted, there are some scenes that would have been better, and plots that would have been far more entertaining had the unscripted version been introduced instead of sticking to the script. So next time you sit down to watch your favorite show, remember you love and relate to these characters, but they could always be different.
