Here's Your First Look At DC's Newest Show 'Powerless'

If there's one consistently strong point in the DC Comics legacy, it's their TV shows. Since the '70s, most (if not all) of their shows have garnered large fanbases and positive reviews. And with a string of recent hits, it looks like they're continuing to pump out comic book shows; except this one's not a comic book show.

Awhile back, NBC and DC announced an intriguing new series — Powerless. Described as a workplace sitcom akin to The Office, viewers would follow an insurance agency as they deal with superhero-related damages. A little while back, casting was revealed for the show, with Vanessa Hudgens, Alen Tudyk, Christina Kirk, and Danny Pudi making up the main cast. Shortly after, we were treated with some short descriptions for each character, as well as the fact that little-known Justice Leaguer Crimson Fox would make her debut in the pilot:

• Vanessa Hudgens as Emily Locke: An insurance claims adjuster who loves her job because she gets to help people
• Danny Pudi as Teddy: Best friend of Emily at work and her trusted confidante. He spends his days creating time-wasting pranks as a way to make their office, the “least super place on earth,” just a little less “unsuper."
• Alan Tudyk as Del: Emily’s new boss in the claims department. Del has just been promoted — not through any merit of his own, but because he’s the owner’s son. A self-proclaimed “rich, over-educated globetrotting wastrel,” Del is a power-mad disastrous dictator of a boss.
• Christina Kirk as Jackie: A fan of superheroes, Jackie has plastered her office cubicle with beefcake shots of super guys. New claims department boss Del makes her his personal assistant, and she begins buckling under his unreasonable and impossible demands.

Lucky for us, NBC has picked up the show for series, as well as released the first official images and synopsis for the show. Take a look!

Vanessa Hudgens stars as Emily, a spunky young insurance adjuster specializing in regular-people coverage against damage caused by the crime-fighting superheroes. It’s when she stands up to one of these larger-than-life figures (after an epic battle messes with her commute) that she accidentally becomes a cult ‘hero’ in her own right…even if it’s just to her group of lovably quirky coworkers. Now, while she navigates her normal, everyday life against an explosive backdrop, Emily might just discover that being a hero doesn’t always require superpowers.”

After 30 Rock, The Office and Parks and Recreation, I can't wait to see another NBC workplace sitcom — especially if it takes place in the DC Universe! It's been confirmed for a while that DC heavyweights like Batman and Superman won't be on the show, but that doesn't mean there won't be any clever mentions! In fact, Rich Johnston of Bleeding Cool has read the script, and had a lot of cool things to say:

• The description of the titles taps into that feeling from the Marvel montage intro but goes in its own direction. We see classic panels from DC Comics, with Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman saving the day, but the focus moves to the civilians in the background, the cast of the TV show.
• It is full to busting of references to superheroes in and around the DC Comics Universe. Such as wall clocks in the office showing Metropolis, Gotham, National City Keystone and the setting for the show, Charm City.
• Emily flossing her teeth while, outside, a 50 foot tentacled creature is vaporized by a laser bean — which she ignores.
• Jackie says, 'I want to nail Aquaman so hard' while reading a People Magazine with Aquaman on the cover, in a cubical covered in beefcake magazine cutouts of DC superheroes.
• And there are jokes about when super folk break into airwaves to threaten each other, to Jackie’s 'It’s like, exchange digits already. Threaten via text like the rest of us.' Later on, Jack O’ Lantern will take over all TVs and monitors to threaten Crimson Fox. he will be ignored by everyone, and turned to mute.
• And Emily justifying a claim against damage caused by Wonder Woman cannot be turned down as an Act of God since she is technically a demigod.
