Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (2019) has taken an unexpected turn... now instead of attractive woman prancing around for fun... there are plenty of woman with opinions, voices, and even some bad ass jobs. However, Hobbs & Shaw is so much more than a great example of modern movies having strong females in it, it's also a great movie in general that I would recommend for anyone to put on their 'Must Watch List'. It has a 90 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, and my personal approval as 'So much better than I expected!'

'Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw' (2019)

Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham in the same movie? I'm in! This is actually all it took me for me to want to watch it... After eight films, and a profit of almost $5 billion worldwide, the Fast & Furious franchise now features its first stand-alone fan base as Hobbs & Shaw. Personally, I think this movie is a great place to put a stop to the Fast & Furious series... with that said, if there are going to be more Fast & Furious movies... can Hattie stay? Please!

"Lawman Luke Hobbs and outcast Deckard Shaw form an unlikely alliance when a cyber-genetically enhanced villain threatens the future of humanity." - IMBD

Strong Female Lead

Vanessa Kirby plays the ultimate badass Hattie Shaw who is the main focus of the entire plot... after all, she is the hero who selflessly took the virus as a desperate attempt to keep it safe. She even later suggested giving up her entire life in order to make sure the world is safe from the virus.

Hattie Shaw found herself in an awful situation when she was mistaken as the killer of her co-workers... however, she did not fold. She had a plan to vanish, and try to figure this out for herself... she never asked for help or a hero, but she did eventually allow her brother and Hobbs to help her once they stopped bickering so much.

Hattie Shaw Quotes

"You have no idea what we’re dealing with.""The only way we survive this is working together, like a team."

Not to mention this bad ass chick!

Madame M played, by Eiza González, is a mysterious billionaire who helps Shaw by supplying him weapons and equipment... in an interesting way. She is tough, dark, and has some kind of romantic relationship with big brother Shaw. Can we have a spin off that follows Madame M? I'd watch that!

Emphasis on Consent

Hattie Shaw and Hobbs start getting along decently well, it's not exactly love at first sight, but Shaw doesn't seem to like his frenemy being close to his sister at all... so when Shaw gets defensive, Hobbs decides to have some fun with him, and tells him that if she wants to "climb this mountain" he will let her... "over and over again". I thought this was the cutest little touch that, even though Hobbs wants to joke about, in order to bother Shaw... he still made sure to put an emphasis on consent and said "if she wants to"... "I will let her".

"Nut Shots"

Instead of being filled with a closer look at boobs and butts... there was a surprisingly high amount of something a writer named Sage young called "Nut Shots". To be honest... I'm not complaining! I really don't mind all these nut shots, I hope this trend becomes more popular in the future.

Bechdel Test

Hobbs & Shaw does fail the Bechdel test... but not in the way you might think. The only problem is that two women don't ever seem to have a conversation with each other... ever. However, the main character is a decently well-rounded character, and not just a supporting character to the men... even if she is the sister of Shaw... and the love interest to Hobbs. Also, the other female characters are all family to Hobbs... you know what, I still think this is close enough, this was a good movie that showed woman with their own personality!

Reverse Bechdel test?

Normally, the Bechdel test is a way to see if female characters have more purpose than just to support the male characters... however, this movie made a surprising turn for me... the two men talk highly about the female characters instead. I'll be honest, I didn't see that coming and I am happy with it.

Your sister is one of the toughest, baddest, most capable women I’ve ever encountered. - Luke Hobbs

So what is the Bechdel test?

Just in case you don't know, or need a reminder, I put the rules of what the movie needs to have in order to pass the Bechdel test below:

  1. The movie has to have at least two women in it,
  2. who talk to each other,
  3. about something besides a man.

Why is everyone forgetting about Vanessa Kirby?

The movie itself does a great job focusing on her character... however wherever I look, everyone is talking about Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham, and then simply forgetting about their female co-star... Don't get me wrong, Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham were a huge part of the movie and absolutely hilarious... but the plot of the movie itself completely focuses on the selfless hero and general badass Hattie who is played by Vanessa Kirby. So... Why are all the reviews and descriptions of the movie highlighting Johnson and Statham... while forgetting their female co-star?

Hello. Nice to meet you! How are you? Hmm... this feels like a really one-sided conversation... why don't you follow me on social media so I can get to know you too!
