'Homecoming' Isn't an Origin Story, but Marvel Just Released One for New 'Spider-Man' Disney XD Animated Series

Excitement is building for the release of #SpiderManHomecoming in theaters, but that isn't the only #SpiderMan property that Marvel has in the pipeline; there's also the upcoming animated series Marvel's Spider-Man on Disney XD. With just over a week to go before the release of the new MCU film, Marvel's official Twitter account today released a short teaser for the series.

After releasing a previous teaser earlier this month, we now have a more definitive look at the wall-crawler (and his alter-ego Peter Parker) in action. In the four-minute clip, we see Spidey swinging across New York and reminiscing, as he often does, about just how he got his powers. From then on, it tells a very familiar story.

Spidey's Origin

In the MCU, Peter Parker has been Spider-Man for six months or so — and, as a consequence, Spider-Man: Homecoming won't be featuring the origin story, which we already saw in Sam Raimi's and Marc Webb's films.

In this new cartoon, though, we're again introduced to Peter Parker as the awkward, affable science geek who's so excited to visit Oscorp with his classmates. As he excitedly takes photos of everything in the building, Peter comes across a strange-looking spider; it turns out that some experimental spiders have escaped. He rejoins his classmates and is paired up with Liz Allan to examine Oscorp's new robot. Then, thanks to Liz's left-handedness, Peter's world is forever changed: the spider bites him, and instantly Peter feels different.

He runs off to the bathroom to throw up — and, upon discovering the door is locked as this particular toilet is under construction, he pushes the door straight off its hinges. Looking horrified, Peter asks what is happening to him, and the teaser ends.

The Series Will Mirror 'Homecoming' in a Number of Ways

It seems that Marvel wants to strike while the iron is hot with Spider-Man and get as much out of their flagship property as they can. The initial teaser showed that Peter will begin his fledgling superhero career in a homemade Spidey suit, not too dissimilar from the one he will sport in the film.

There's also the prominence of Liz Allan, which mirrors Spider-Man: Homecoming as she will be the primary love interest in the upcoming film. Earlier Spider-Man animations have featured Mary Jane Watson and Gwen Stacy as Peter's primary flame.

From the message at the end of the teaser, it's obvious that this will be a short series of clips to build the excitement for the upcoming show. Marvel has done something similar lately with Ant-Man and the Wasp, having a series of shorts shared on Twitter.

There's more to come, and with Spider-Man: Homecoming's imminent release, there's certainly an appetite for the web-slinger right now.
