As the countdown starts to one comic books biggest battles, the Marvel films are starting to piece together where we have last seen characters and the arrival of Thanos. Thor: Ragnarok is its own standalone film focusing more on the comedic destruction of Asgard and it's newly established king but it does set up some ground work for Infinity War.

The Destruction of Asgard

Asgard is known to be the protector of the Nine Realms, keeping dangerous prisoners and artifacts locked up and protecting Midgard (Earth) from outside threats. With Asgard destroyed, the Nine Realms will soon be plunged into chaos just like we saw in the first film when Thor destroyed the Rainbow Bridge. This leaves it very open for Thanos to easily get by and make his way towards Earth.

The Infinity Gauntlet

We had seen the Infinity Gauntlet in the first Thor film, so when it reappeared with Thanos arming himself with the Infinity gauntlet in the post-credits scene of Avengers: Age of Ultron, fans began to wonder which one was the real gauntlet. In Thor: Ragnarok, Hela, the Goddess of Death, reveals that all of her father's (Odin) relics are mostly fake, including the Infinity Gauntlet that was seen in the first Thor film.

So we now know that the gauntlet that Thanos has is the real one and he is very close to obtaining all six of the Infinity Stones.

Loki Plays His Part

Loki has always been up to no good, he is the God of Mischief after all. Thor: Ragnarok is no different as Loki continues to deceive and trick the Asgardians as in the beginning of the film he is still disguised as Odin, while Thor has been off exploring the universe for answers.

He does come to Thor's aid more often than not in this particular film but it is one scene that stands out the seems to pave way to Infinity War. It is when Loki goes down into Odin's vault to retrieve the Surtur to help defeat Hela that he happens to pause in front of the Tesseract. Being the God of Mischief and having a past already with the Tesseract, it makes sense that Loki would take possession of it once again.

It only further confirmed that Loki must have taken the Tesseract as fans who saw the Infinity War trailer at Disney’s D23 conference we saw Loki handing over the Tesseract to Thanos. It makes sense as Loki would probably want to side with who he thinks would be the most powerful and the Tesseract would help secure his safety.

What really connected Thor: Ragnarok to Avengers: Infinity War was seeing a much larger ship than Thor's own that after some research looks to belong to Thanos and The Black Order, the main antagonists for Infinity War. Again, this makes sense after seeing the Infinity War trailer at Disney’s D23 conference as it starts with Thor drifting through space only to land on the windshield of the Guardians of the Galaxy's ship. We can then assume that whatever happens with Thor's ship encountering this much larger ship results in Thor drifting through space.

There is only one more Marvel film, Black Panther, that hits theaters February 16, 2018 where we will hopefully see the final Infinity Stone.

Avengers: Infinity War is in theaters May 4, 2018. Thor: Ragnarok is in theaters now.
