Disclaimer. This book was gifted to me around May 2018. I did not purchase this, but I was also told a review was not necessary. Despite this being gifted, the review will be 100 percent honest, as per all my reviews.

"It doesn't matter how clever, talented, beautiful, funny, fragrant, or good at indoor boules you are. Without confidence, your skills will go to shit."Chapter One: How to be confident. Page 11.

As an early-twenties adult (new adult? trainee adult?) the thought of attempting to survive adulthood with barely any actual life skills (The mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell, but a retirement fund? Who knows), has been severely daunting.

This is where Daisy Buchanan's book, How to be a Grown Up comes in.

Daisy comfortably discusses life lessons she's learned herself. While retelling relatable stories, teaching us how to go through different motions in life, as well as casually discussing more intimate topics. Such as wanking.

Personally, this book wasn't one I could sit and read in a day, but it was one I could pick up daily and read a chapter or two of. This was a great way for me to read, and enjoy what the book had to offer.

Daisy didn't only tell her own stories throughout her book, she also included text from people she knew throughout the book, telling their tales to the related chapter.

This was something I really enjoyed. I was able to read and relate to not only Daisy, but a good group of other women too.

Throughout the book, usually towards the end of chapters, there's a 'Daisy does this' section. Sharing what Daisy does in relation to the chapter you're reading. I find this great to look back on, should I need some advice or ideas on how to handle an issue (should it be related to the chapter, of course).

As someone with an interest in writing, I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Daisy's experiences with her career, from her first job to where she is now.

Some chapters I enjoyed:

  • How to be confident
  • How to survive at work
  • A few words about panic attacks
  • A few words about wanking
  • How to make mistakes
  • How to have a happy beginning

"Sex, like everything else, is a confidence game, and everything that makes you feel good about yourself and your game plan is worth pursuing."

A few words about... wanking. Page 168.

Final thoughts

This is a book I truly enjoyed. It's one I can see myself keeping on the bookshelf for many years to come, referring back to it when I need Daisy's advice and wisdom.

According to Amazon, you can buy How to be a Grown Up for:

  • Kindle - £1.99
  • Paperback - £14.94
  • Audiobook - £13.12/£7.99

For the information you get, and the overall quality of the book, I would definitely say that these prices are worth it.

Will I read this book again?

Most definitely. I don't know if I'd sit down and read the entire book again, but I firmly believe I'll be going back to this book chapter by chapter when I need and/or want to.

Would I recommend it?

Absolutely. I've already lent the book to a family member, and it certainly is one I'd suggest friends and more family read.

I would consider gifting the book to late-teens, those who are approaching, or who are already in their twenties. Because I have learned a lot from this book, and I would love for others to gain the same advice I was able to.

As stated at the start:

This was gifted to me during 2018, but there was no requirement to write this review. I'm doing this now because I want to write it, and I want to share a good book with people.
