Usually when I look to see what is #Trending, I get things like 'Monkey decorates a Christmas Tree' or '#InstagramCrashed ... again'. However, today was different in the best way possible. Today I looked up what was trending and to my surprise it was a powerful speech about self confidence, feeling accepted into society, depression and many other important topics. How did Daniel Howell do it? How was he able to reach such an important message to so many people?

Daniel Howell shook the world, and I mean this in the best way possible, all by publishing a video on YouTube titled "Basically I'm Gay." Only 8 hours after the video was posted it already had over 2 million views on Youtube and over 200 thousands tweets about the video. More importantly, it has received a huge amount of positive feedback.

Table of Contents for "Basically I'm Gay"

  • Chapter 1, The World - 2:08
  • Chapter 2, Feelings - 9:35
  • Chapter 3, Internalized Oppression - 16:50
  • Chapter 4, Labels - 31:53
  • Chapter 5, Fear - 38:56

"We all need to stand up for equality and social justice, even if it doesn't apply to us" - Daniel Howell

"No one stood up for me when it mattered the most and that almost cost me everything" Dan continues, "So, if you see a woman being harassed, a gay guy being threatened, someone muttering something racist, say something, do something because if you're still or silent, the victim will just think that you are against them, too. We all have a responsibility."

Keep making those videos Dan! We need you!

Thank you Dan for showing the courage to share this video with the world. I know that it's positive moments like this that will help create a safer world for everyone to be free to be themselves ... who ever they are and whatever their story is.

Also, thank you so much for saying that you are 'basically gay' instead of giving into unnecessary titles. The human race tends to be way too obsessed with putting labels on everything and it's these small moments where I can feel clear minded and at peace to know that all of that obsession is doing more than damage than good.

Thank you for having the courage to be yourself in front of the whole world.

We, the internet world, support you fully!

Hello. Nice to meet you! How are you? Hmm ... this feels like a really one sided conversation ... why don't you follow me on social media so I can get to know you too!
