I Am Spider-Man

My life changed forever on August 15th, 1962.

Fan Art Friday #18 – SPIDER-MAN | Nerdist

I was just an average-looking guy, a nerd with whom girls won't go with, but bullies would. My life was ordinary. I would come back from school, study, talk to aunt May and Uncle Ben, and go to bed. I dreamt of getting into a good college and becoming a scientist, but destiny had something else in store for me.

August 15th, 1962 was a normal day, except it wasn't. A Science Exhibition was held nearby, so I asked Liz (Flash Thompson, my bully's friend) out to accompany me, which she turned down as magnificently as possible. Thus I headed there alone.

My teachers were there too. They were pleased to see me. So was I. I thought to myself that instead of people going to concerts, they should come here and take a look at what science has to offer them. Soon, I got so engrossed in it until a spider bit me. If it hadn't been glowing, I would have believed it was a normal spider. I was terrified, so I ran off. I was scared and confused about what was happening to me and a car had almost hit me. In my response, I leapt on a nearby wall, finding to my shock that I could climb walls! The spider that bit me had enhanced my body, and my body is now another scientific discovery.

Somewhere, a wrestling match was happening so, whether in excitement or in greed of $100, I participated in it too. It wasn't a surprise to me when I won. I decided to make a career in entertainment; that night, I made my costume and web shooters. The next day, I presented my skills and amazed the public. They called me Spider-Man! The very day, Uncle Ben bought me the microscope, the one I had my eye on. In a few days, I became a National sensation! Nothing could be as good as this was, until...

Uncle Ben was murdered by the man I had spared in arrogance. The man whom I could have stopped was instead allowed to go scot free by me. I should have handed him over to police. I gave him way. Then, I thought, it was a guard’s job, not mine. Mine was to entertain. That day was my last day in entertainment.

From that day onwards, I had become the crime fighter Spider-Man, who is always in the neighborhood of the crime scene.

Ever since Uncle Ben died, my life has changed forever. Not only I became Spider-Man, but I also learnt harsh realities of life. When he was alive, he and Aunt May somehow paid the bills and fulfilled my wishes. I knew we were not rich, however, I didn't know how hard it was to earn money. How they both worked so hard that I could live comfortably. They are just my aunt and uncle; however, they are no lesser than my parents. Had they not taken me in, my life would have been different.

Whenever I bruised myself, Aunt May gave me medicines. Whenever I was scared, Uncle Ben calmed me. It’s not that I don’t respect my biological parents, I respect them. If it weren't for their gametes, I wouldn't have been alive. It’s just that I never got to know them well.

After his death, getting a job for me was my priority. I had to help the woman who nurtured me as her own son. It was my chance to repay their kindness. It was my time to be a dutiful son.

Since my debut as Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, newspapers all over New York want a photograph of me for their papers. One such newspaper called The Daily Bugle even posted a reward for the one who brings them Spider-Man’s (mine) best photograph. For me, it couldn’t be a better offer. Giving them a photograph of mine in my suit was not a tough job. Thus, the next time any crime happened, I would hang my camera somewhere near me using my web shooters, and set a timer in it; while I take down the bad guys, it would take my pictures. You know New York, no matter how many superheroes are here to fight crimes, they never end. Alas, it didn’t take me long to wait for such an opportunity.

Later that day, I went to The Daily Bugle. It was exactly as how I imagined. Everyone was in a hurry; a grumpy old editor, and a nice, beautiful secretary of the editor, (by the way her name’s Betty.) When I told Betty the reason I had come, she called up the editor (who’s J Jonah Jameson) about this, then gave me a green light. When I went inside, I was shocked by the raucous of the room. Anyway, I showed him my shots and he gave me $300. That I reluctantly agreed. I don’t know what have I done that pissed him off so much from Spider-Man that none of his articles shed me in good light. All he ever does is make conspiracy theories about me. But as long as I can earn money, I cannot care about it.

There have been days when I thought of giving Spider-Man up. There were days that made me proud about it. I have lost many precious moments of life, but I have gained some too. Some of my loved ones had even paid a price for my secret. Yet I cannot stop. They know without Spider-Man, I’ll be dull again. So many people now look up to me. I cannot let them down. At the end of the day, we all have to make choices. And this is mine.
