I 'Wonder' Why? Kate Beckinsale Reveals Why She Didn't Play Wonder Woman

With that Amazonian physique and screen-heroine personality, Kate Beckinsale would undoubtedly have been a popular choice for the role, but why did it never happen?

These days, Kate Beckinsale may be remembered as the blood-sucking Selene from Sony's Underworld series, but could you ever imagine her suiting up to play the comic book legend that is Wonder Woman? While Gal Gadot ditched the tights and took Diana Prince to our screens for the DECU, Warner Bros. nearly lassoed Beckinsale for the role in the early '00s. With that Amazonian physique and screen-heroine personality, Beckinsale would undoubtedly have been a popular choice for the role, but why did it never happen?

Joss and 'Becks'

Speaking to Yahoo Movies, #KateBeckinsale revealed how close she was to catching a plane to Themyscira:

"The incarnations that I was seeing were[she trails off]...They weren’t this one [the 2017 film].”

While seemingly cryptic, it all makes sense when you learn that Beckinsale was rumored to star in Joss Whedon's #WonderWoman outing. Whedon may be lauded as a great pioneer of the female lead, thanks to the likes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the upcoming Batgirl movie, but his Wonder Woman script recently leaked online to less than favorable reviews. With the script branded as sexist and misogynistic, we imagine that Beckinsale was glad she never joined that sinking ship.

However, after already playing Selene for a number of years, and now with a young daughter in tow, Beckinsale wasn't overly keen to be branded a sex symbol once again:

“I don’t know if I was desperate to be in a leotard. I’d already done the rubber trousers. You have to take in that you have a child at some point and how much could you possibly embarrass them.”

That being said, she couldn't help but blush at the various uber-fans wanting her to take to the skies in an invisible jet. It seems that even without playing the warrior princess of DC, fandom still loves KB:

“I was just at some comic convention the other weekend, and the number of people who’ve got a tattoo of my face, I mean, what an extraordinary commitment...There’s also a very big alternate universe where I’m Catwoman. There’s a lot of that."

With Gadot's performance in Wonder Woman taking her straight to the top of the DCEU, the Beckinsale era is but a distant memory, and while it may have been a nice idea, it looks like it will never come to pass. For now, Beckinsale seems content with ditching her fangs and finding work away from vampires and action movies. That being said, could anyone else imagine her a slightly more mature Selina Kyle in the DECU's darker slate of upcoming movies? If Geoff Johns wants a Catwoman in line with Batfleck's grizzled Bruce Wayne, who better than Beckinsale to slip on a different pair of PVC pants?
