If Supergirl Flies into 'Man of Steel 2,' a DCEU Prequel Comic Book Already Revealed Her Origin Story

Wonder Woman has finally given us the DC superhero movie we deserve and is rightly ruling the box office. It's also offered hope for the future of both the DCEU and female superhero films. Rumors are now flying that a Man of Steel sequel could introduce Supergirl to the DCEU. If that does happen, we already know what she's been up to.

The Official 'Man Of Steel' Prequel Comic: Supergirl Has Landed On Earth

Man of Steel was the film that established the DCEU, and there were seeds planted in the film that #Supergirl has already arrived on Earth — specifically, an open pod in the Fortress of Solitude. While Clark Kent is exploring the Fortress for the first time, he comes across some strange pods containing preserved lifeforms with one mysteriously open. This would be the pod that brought his cousin, Kara, to Earth.

The Man of Steel prequel comic explains how the Kryptonian scout ship — which later became the Fortress of Solitude — arrived on Earth.

Kara Zor-El trained in the Kryptonian jungle with a group of young pilots to become part of a program that would expand Krypton's empire across the stars; only four of them would be chosen for the mission. One of the candidates, Dev-Em, kills Kara's love interest and is sentenced to death for the first murder on Krypton in years.

After beginning her mission — and receiving the "Growth Codex" used to populate other worlds — Kara and her team go into stasis, as the journey will take years.

When she awakes, she discovers that Dev-Em has stowed away, killed her comrades and altered the course of the ship to our own solar system.

The two battle and discover that they have new powers thanks to the yellow sun. After Kara defeats Dev-Em, the ship crashes on Earth and a figure is seen leaving the ship.

Kara Zor-El exists in the DCEU — assuming this comic book remains canon — so it's only a matter of time before she is properly introduced.

The Differences Between CW Kara and DCEU Kara

Man of Steel 2 wouldn't be the first time that Kara Zor-El has appeared on our screens. After Helen Slater starred in the 1984 movie Supergirl, a spin-off from Christopher Reeve's Superman films, the character went on to appear in Smallville and now has her own beloved show on The CW.

But the tone of The CW's Arrowverse is much different than the DCEU's, despite the show's recent Wonder Woman Easter Egg.

Melissa Benoist has made the character her own during Supergirl's two seasons, just as Grant Gustin has with Barry Allen in #TheFlash — with Ezra Miller stepping into those red boots in Justice League and Tyler Hoechlin playing Superman on Supergirl, there's precedent for different actors concurrently playing the same DC character.

Supergirl is certainly on the lighter end of the Arrowverse spectrum when it comes to tone. Not only does Kara have amazing powers, she enjoys using them to save the world. The DCEU is different; Man of Steel was much darker than we have come to expect from a Superman film. The DCEU may be changing that direction to a more hopeful one, thanks to Wonder Woman, but it's possible that Kara in the DCEU would be a less lighthearted character than Kara on The CW.

Also, in The CW's Supergirl, Kara was sent to Earth when she was 13 years old to protect her baby cousin — and as such, had a great deal of growing up to do once she arrived there. DCEU Kara crashes to Earth as a grown woman and an accomplished pilot at that. She's also been on Earth for potentially thousands of years.

Supergirl's relationship with Superman plays quite a big role on The CW show, with Kara often turning to him for advice in her fledgling superhero career. If Kara did land on Earth thousands of years before Kal-El did, then why would she need him for guidance, as opposed to the other way around?

It's Time For A Supergirl Movie, Not Just A 'Man Of Steel 2' Cameo

The continued success of Wonder Woman can only bode well for future female-led superhero movies. The Man of Steel sequel is still in the early stages of production, so it makes sense that the producers may want to include Kara Zor-El. But hopefully that's to set her up for her own solo adventure, which could be just as successful as Diana Prince's.

There should no longer be any fear about female-led superhero movies. Let's hope Warner Bros. gives us the Supergirl that we (and Kara) deserve.
