In Defense of Sexy Cosplay

The Reasons Why I Defend It 100 Percent

Me as a sexy Billy Cranston (March 2018)

Cosplay is a way to express ourselves and also stepping outside of our comfort zone. In this article, I'll be talking about why I defend cosplayers who choose to do it. I've been a cosplayer for almost four years and once in a while, I like to let loose and be carefree. It's great to have fun every time you cosplay and not take yourself seriously. When a convention gets hot and crowded, you want to show some skin, but not too much. It makes it easier for you to move around. Conventions are costly and if you're willing to spend money on creating a sexy version of your character, by all means, be my guest. Sexy cosplay is fun to do and I have absolutely no problems with my friends and other people doing it. As long as you're not hurting me or others, embrace it without apologizing for expressing yourself. In other words, if you like it, then I like it.

The main argument from critics that I've heard against sexy cosplay is that cosplayers do it for attention, likes, and shares. That assumption is so ridiculous and unfair. People who say that are probably jealous and never done it before. You may find it annoying, but cosplayers have the right to embody as whatever character they want to be. Other people might say that they have children and don't want them seeing overtly sexual versions of their favorite characters, which I can understand. You don't want your children seeing certain things that might be deemed as inappropriate. However, if you as a parent is also bothered by cosplayers showing off a little bit of boob, leg, or arm, then you don't have to look at them. You can always leave the convention at any time. No one is forcing you to glare at those cosplayers.

Growing up, I was thin and some of my relatives and parents said that I looked sickly. From the ages of five to my early 20s, I weighed under 130 pounds. The heaviest that I have weighed to this day was around 200 pounds. At times, I was insecure about my appearance. Looking at myself in the mirror every day and stepping on the scale was painful. Whenever I look at my pictures from different conventions, I looked heavy. I had to do something to take care of this problem. I started working out, not to lose weight, but making sure that I was in decent shape. For the first time in years, I felt good about myself and more confident. I'm not afraid to show off my body and if people have a problem with it, that's their business. I don't owe anyone an explanation on how I cosplay or how I look. Back in March, I saw a post on Instagram about this same topic and gave my two cents about it. I defend it 100 percent and stated that cosplayers have the right to do what they want.

In closing, I want to say a few words to the critics. Sexy cosplay is here to stay and it's not going anywhere, whether you like it or not. I know that's not what you want to hear, but it's the truth. If you still believe that cosplayers do it for attention, I would ask you why you feel that way. I understand that everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but it's not going to stop anyone from doing sexy cosplay. I've done sexy versions of different characters over the past few years, such as Mace Windu, Pokemon Trainer Red, Eleventh Doctor from Doctor Who, and two months ago, as Billy Cranston (aka the Blue Ranger) from the Power Rangers series. I'm not embarrassed to show a little bit of skin. I feel that people are too easily offended about cosplayers who dress "too sexy." At the end of the day, sexy cosplay is for everyone, regardless of one's size, race, sexual orientation, etc. To the naysayers: I challenge you to try being a sexy version of a character and maybe, it would change your opinion about it.

What is your opinion about sexy cosplay? Do you believe that cosplayers need to tone their sexiness down a bit or are you on board with it? Also, if you were to go as a sexy version of a character, who would it be?
