In My Opinion: The 5 Worst Films of the Last 5 Years

2014 to 2019

I think you all saw this one coming. I've actually been working on this article for a while because there have been so many good movies in the past five years, ones that I have loved dearly. But then there have been films that make me feel like if I have to watch them again, I'll be calling the police—because that would be tantamount to torture. What we are going to do is go through what I believe are the five worst films of the last five years and, see exactly why I think so.

This doesn't depend on how much money the films made, because really—some of these films made a lot of money. Making a lot of money doesn't make a film any good (stares at Transformers). As someone who has studied film for a few years and has a background in drama, I can honestly say that there are films which have a combination of bad filmmaking and bad acting. This, even though they may have made a lot of money because of their attraction to 12-year-old dummies who don't know anything and waste their parents' hard earned money watching awful things instead of reading a book—makes the film a big ol' thumbs down in the books of critics and knowledgeable audiences alike.

I'm normally not for snobbery when it comes to film, but where opinion on certain films are concerned, we need to think on a slightly more technical level. This is because if we don't, then we'll have crying teenagers coming to us saying "you can't say that about the thing I like..." Yes I can. I know more than you. I have qualifications in this stuff.

It's better to shoo away the people who don't think on your level where this stuff is concerned. So, let's go through my top five worst films of the last five years!

5. 'Bohemian Rhapsody' (2018)

I think a lot of critics agree that this film was a filmmaking disaster. By the problematic Bryan Singer, this film has an overcast of bad luck when it comes to filming, sloppy cinematography and editing that looks like Brian May could've done better by himself. The costumes were a mess and the acting by some members of the cast was... well the word "awful" is being polite. If you know anything about filmmaking, acting and have any basic knowledge of how a film should be made—I think you should use this in film class to show how a film shouldn't be made. I had to sit through this tripe and as God as my witness I won't be doing it again.

Biggest Mistake: Bryan Singer being hired

Biggest Plus: Bryan Singer being fired

As much as I dislike Rami Malek, there is absolutely no professionalism in throwing something at someone you're working with (as I have researched that Bryan Singer actually threw something and was physically abusive towards Rami Malek). Also, we all know about Singer's questionable past and why he still has work is beyond me. He should really be barred from working or be in jail.

4. 'Ghostbusters' (2016)

I initially thought this film was funny, but when I looked beneath the surface I found...you guessed it, nothing. The film severely lacked any substance—it's not something you remember. It also looked like someone had a really hard time choosing their camera angles. I don't know what they were trying to achieve but whatever it was—I wanted it to stop. I don't care if the film stars men or women, you can't show me camerawork like that and think I'll sit there happily.

Biggest Mistake: Cinematography

Biggest Plus: Chris Hemsworth is hilarious and before you ask, no I don't find him attractive.

The film was funny and that's really the only thing it had going for it. At the end of the day, the jokes grow old after only one watch which means it wasn't very effective at all.

3. 'Suicide Squad' (2016)

There are some very good actors in this film: Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie etc. but, the film was just scripted so badly that I was very close to getting up and walking out of the damn theatre. I felt it was really the scripting and Jared Leto's miscasting as the Joker that really let the film down. There was a lot of "hype" around the film before it came out and people were sharing art, trailers and even Margot Robbie's birthday (as I recall) being her blowing out candles in her Harley Quinn gear. The scripting made the hype not only die down, but it transformed into a loathing for the film.

Biggest Mistake: Scripting

Biggest Plus: Margot Robbie saved the film

To be honest, if Margot Robbie wasn't in it—I think the film would've done a lot worse than it did. I think that the film would've received worse reviews and would've just flopped at the box office entirely. Most people went to see Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn because she's not only a good actress but she's also one of the first people to play Harley on the screen. It was a hyped character.

2. 'Apostle' (2018)

This is quite possibly the worst horror film I've ever seen let alone just one of the worst films I've seen in the last five years. There's many things wrong with this film—the first thing is the terribly predictable storyline. The storyline is something you can tell that has been begged, borrowed and stolen from every single religiously-themed horror film ever. It's a very basic horror film with very cookie-cutter predictability. The next thing that is wrong with it is Dan Stevens. He was terrible in this film; he was trying very hard to do a similar performance to Daniel Radcliffe in The Woman in Black and the cop from The Wicker Man. But it failed epically.

The cast was very basic and apart from Michael Sheen—I don't feel like any of the cast were really doing anything worth your time watching it. It was a film far too packed full of bad performances for Michael Sheen to let it up. The final thing was the script. The script was awful, badly performed and some of the actors basically sounded like they were reading something rather than acting. As I've said, it's possibly in the worst five horror films I've ever seen and further towards the top purely because of the terrible acting and vivid predictability.

Biggest Mistake: The cast of actors chosen to play the roles

Biggest Plus: Michael Sheen

Michael Sheen is a brilliant actor but, in this film, it really looks like he's pushing himself attempting to save the film. But, between Dan Stevens and Lucy Boynton—(in my opinion they are two of the worst actors of all time), you know this film is going to be bad and I really should've known just by reading the cast list. But, I still gave it a chance. It is such a waste of time though.

1. 'Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice' (2016)

Well wasn't this a damned disaster from the very beginning? Again, as with Apostle, there are many things that destroyed this film (which is a shame because I for one, was really looking forward to it before it came out). The first thing that destroyed this film was the sloppy stylistics. The film was far too dark and sometimes, you couldn't even see what was really going on. The second thing was Henry Cavill, because we have to face the fact that he is the worst Superman by a flying mile. The third thing was the unpredictability and unreliability of Ben Affleck. He used to be a good actor, but he took a rather huge slump—I feel like he was wrong to play Batman. The next thing was the script—it was cheesy and the lines sometimes were overdone and overwritten, you could tell it wasn't written to be like natural speech. It wasn't written like Nolan's trilogy was. There weren't any memorable lines and yet, it wasn't normal speech. It was cheesy, dark and it was hollow. The final thing was the whole "Martha" situation which I found really annoying. It made the film more of a disaster than it already was.

Biggest Mistake: Martha

Biggest Plus: It's a Batman and a Superman film

Really the only redeeming factor about this film is that you get both of DC's biggest selling stars in one film. It is a film that really starts off Snyder's universe but unfortunately, it bloody ended it as well. Whatever that was, I don't want to see it happen again. Also, I enjoyed Justice League and that's why it isn't here. At least Justice League was fun—BvS was not. It was an embarrassment.
