Horror fans rejoice—Shaun Of The Dead is back on Netflix UK 16 May

Every week I will list the indie films that are getting added to Netflix over the next seven days, so you indie fans are up-to-date, and ready for them!

Here are the indie films that are hitting Netflix between May 16 and 23:

'Good Sam'

Coming to Netflix: 16 May

Release: 2019

Based on the book of the same title, Good Sam is a Netflix original drama, which follows a news reporter investigating a mystery man who repeatedly leaves large bags of money on the doorsteps of strangers. On her journey to discover more about "Good Sam," the Good Samaritan leaving the money, she learns more about herself, as well as finds romance.

'Shaun Of The Dead'

Coming to Netflix: 16 May

Release: 2004

Available: UK

Yes! It's time to celebrate, because after leaving Netflix in February, Shaun of the Dead is coming back this Thursday by popular demand! It's no surprise people want to see it on the streaming service again, because it's considered to be one of the best comedy-horrors of all time. If you're a fan of British indies, and you haven't seen it yet, where have you been? Get the popcorn ready, and check out Simon Pegg and Nick Frost in this hilarious zombie classic.

'Dying To Tell'

Coming to Netflix: 17 May

Release: 2018

Available: USA & UK

In this eye-opening documentary created by Hernan Zin, war reporters describe the horrors they have witnessed during their time reporting in warzones, and how their lives have been affected by it. Some of the journalists interviewed even discuss what it is like to have been kidnapped in the middle of a war zone. Although it is difficult to watch, this micro-budget documentary by Hernan Zin is informative, and offers an intimate insight into the pain and suffering that war brings.

'See You Yesterday'

Coming to Netflix: 17 May

Release: 2019

Available: USA & UK

This quirky sci-fi is produced by Spike Lee, and tells the story of two teenage friends; CJ and Sebastian, who also happen to be science prodigies. They invent a backpack that enables them to time travel, and decide to put it to good use by going back in time to save CJ's older brother from death. Not only is this a fun adventure movie, but it also examines socio-cultural issues by presenting how the teenagers challenge the oppressive society they are living in.

'The Blackcoat's Daughter'

Coming to Netflix: 18 May

Release: 2015

Available: USA

A perfectly creepy psychological horror to indulge in on a Friday night with female friends and pizza—Emma Roberts fans will also be interested. This A24 production tells the story of two girls who find themselves trapped at their Catholic boarding school over winter break (and what is a horror film when it's not set at a Catholic boarding school?). During this time they experience a number of paranormal occurrences, caused by an evil force they do not understand. Will they make it out alive?

'Blood Father'

Coming to Netflix: 19 May

Release: 2016

Available: UK

In this intense action indie, Mel Gibson stars as protective father, John Link, whose daughter shows up asking for help when she gets into trouble with her drug-dealing boyfriend, and the cartel gang he is a part of. He and his daughter decide to go on the run, and their gritty adventure consists of gangs, grenades, and booby traps. William H Macy also stars.

'Jonathan'

Coming to Netflix: 21 May

Release: 2018

Available: UK

The second sci-fi indie coming to Netflix this week—Jonathan stars Baby Driver's Golden Globe nominee, Ansel Elgort, as its main character, Jonathan, who has a body that two people inhabit. These two people are brothers, and they each take turns to occupy the body for 12 hours every day. The brothers' contrasting personalities begin to interfere with each ones' personal affairs, and other people involved with Jonathan understandably start to become very confused. Variety film critic Dennis Harvey has said that it is an "intelligent and absorbing tale."

'Moonlight'

Source: No Film School

Coming to Netflix: 21 May

Release: 2016

Available: USA

This heartfelt Oscar-winner has been highly praised for its thought-provoking representation of a young black man, Chiron, who is struggling to understand his sexuality, and identity. The story is told in three chapters, in which we see Chiron at three different stages in his life—as a child, as a teenager, and as an adult. Moonlight is a very gripping, but it's also a tender and compassionate look at how a young gay African-American experiences life after growing up in a deeply deprived, and judgmental neighbourhood.
