Probably one of the most anticipated movies of the year, Marvel’s Infinity War smashed box office records as people rushed out to catch the latest installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). If you haven’t seen any of the Marvel films, then you have A LOT of catching up to do: ten year's worth. With the huge success of Black Panther earlier in the year, moviegoers were pumped up to see so many of the Marvel characters come together in Infinity War.

Infinity War is an Avengers movie; however, almost all of the Marvel movies have become about more than the main character. This movie certainly didn’t focus on any one character or group of characters. With Infinity War, we see our heroes being faced with a threat out of this world, Thanos (Josh Brolin). A being who is hell-bent on acquiring all of the Infinity Stones to accomplish his goals of destroying half of the universe. The story may start in space, with Thanos hunting down the stones he knows the location of, but the violence quickly makes it to Earth where he seeks to get the Mind Stone from Vison (Paul Bettany) and the Time Stone being protected by Dr. Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch). This course of action should come as no surprise to followers of the MCU.

Early on, we find some of our main heroes coming face to face with either Thanos or his minions, but we also see the struggle of getting this huge cast of characters together. (So many I’m not even going to try and list them all). However, there is still a massive amount of tension since the Civil War movie, bringing the emotional level of the movie to an all-time high. To me, it seemed to be the goal of the writers of the movie to pull at our heartstrings.

I don’t want to give too much away, even though there are spoilers everywhere; however, keep in mind, no matter the ending of this movie, this is far from the end of the story. It has already been said that Infinity War is only the start. I will say, make sure you have your tear tissues (what I call the extra napkins I snag from the concession stand) and be ready for an emotional roller coaster full of action.

What I Liked

There are very few Marvel movies I can say I don’t like, and Infinity War certainly lives up to what I expect from the MCU. I loved the writers’ choices of interactions. The characters they put together in different areas of the film worked well together to create a mix of tension, comedy, and emotional turmoil. I was especially a fan of the huge ego trio of Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), and Dr. Strange. These three working together was very interesting to watch, especially with the comic relief of young Spiderman (Tom Holland).

The movie also had a fair amount of comedy mixed with high action. Marvel has really come a long way in adding in the laughable moments, and Infinity War needed the tension relief throughout the film. Some of my favorite comedic moments were set in Wakanda. While the comedy level was low compared to Guardians of the Galaxy and Thor: Ragnarok, it did shine in that oh so lovable, MCU way.

What I Didn’t Like

Sadly, Infinity War does not make my top five movies when it comes to the MCU, and not just because of the unsettling tense premise of the movie. There were several things which I did not enjoy.

First, while I understand that they had to bring a huge amount of characters together from all over the Universe, I felt like the movie was a little on the slow side. This could have been due to the writers’ desire to really get our emotions in high gear; however, I do feel like this was a case where too many of the AWESOME scenes are seen in the preview. Not that there weren’t plenty of action scenes not seen, just that overall it was a bit on slow side.

I also noticed something which I found a bit disturbing. Now, this may not be something that has happened in all of the MCU movies, however, I felt with this large cast, they seemed to put the women fighters against women fighters and the men versus the men. It would have been nice to see it mixed up a bit more. After all, we all know that some of the ladies of Marvel can really kick butt and take names. Now there were times when this wasn’t the case, but overall, it seemed to happen a lot in this movie.

My Overall

Overall, I enjoyed the movie, but as mentioned before, it is not very high up in my MCU choices of rewatchable movies. However, it definitely is a needed story to continue on with the MCU and I loved seeing so many of my favorite characters interacting together. I would give it an overall score of 7/10.
