It was a heck of a lot of fun getting to interview Michael Dolce (Sire Studios) this week! Michael is a regular on the comic con circuit, with many incredible titles to his name.

As my first comic con approaches, I've been reaching out to pro-conners for their advice to having a successful con. Toronto Comic Con is just five days from starting and I have to say—I'm getting really darn excited to be there representing my Fire Fury Saga!

But let's face it—just showing up isn't enough! There are plenty of people vying for attention at the conventions, and without a game plan, you can end up twiddling your thumbs. Michael had some excellent tips on how to have a successful con as you'll see in our interview, if getting into the comic con circuit is on your bucket list pay attention to his great advice!

We got a chance to ask Michael about his work, the industry in general, and for his best tips for those trying to get into the comic book world - plus about his upcoming projects!

Our Interview (Questions in bold, responses non-bold.)

What was the first comic you read?

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #5 – Archie Comics. Featured the Man-Ray. Kind of cheesy but awesome.

What inspired you to write your first comic?

My friends believe it or not. They were making Ghostbusters comics and it seemed fun. We all made TMNT comics. I was hooked.

You do a lot of comic conventions, what advice would you give someone just starting out?

Understand what your goal in going to these shows are. Is it to network? Is it to sell? Is it to acquire future fans? Is it all? If so, you need specific plans for all three.

"ComicCon-ing is HARD WORK. Seriously, we schlep across the country, leave our families, our wives, our kids, our pets to promote this thing we love called COMICS. So it’s absolutely refreshing when we can get such a great response from new friends and old fans alike. And that was absolutely the case at Fan Expo Boston this past weekend."

What was your biggest surprise when you got into publishing comics?

The fact that you’re only as good as the last book you made. No matter how much work you’ve put into something, the outside world only knows the final product, reads it and is waiting for the next one to come out. You start back at zero every issue.

What’s your favorite part of the creative process?

I love getting the artwork back and fine-tuning the dialogue so there’s a song and dance with every page turn. That is an unmatched feeling.

Tell us about your latest work:

The Mainstream is the last series I created. It’s about an inter-dimensional police force policing alternate realities, keeping bad guys from other worlds from invading ours. It was 5 issues published through Zenescope. We’re releasing an exclusive “Art of Mainstream” at c2e2 this month.

I’m also the host of the Secrets of the Sire podcast – we talk comics movies TV and pop culture every Wednesday at 8 PM.

Any upcoming releases in the near future for us to look out for?

I’ll have some announcements forthcoming. ☺ All related to the launch of my new brand Sire Studios inc. (sirestudiosinc.com). This involves doing more comics and podcasts.

Where can we buy your comics?

At the aforementioned sirestudiosinc.com

What conventions will we see you at next?

I’ll be at c2e2 March 21-24, speaking at Wizard World Philadelphia and Eternal Con in May and June. At the Zenescope booth at San Diego Comic Con and I’ll be exhibiting at Baltimore and New York Comic Con in October.

What are some fun facts about yourself?

I’m a big sports fan – play basketball still. I’ve got a wife, two kids, and a dog and juggling all of this while working has become my life haha

Anything I didn’t ask you’d like to add?

The podcasting world is exploding and is playing a pivotal role in creating new IPs. I’m also writing two TV pilots at the moment. ☺
