DreamWorks — a production company responsible for bringing us unique, odd, and heartwarming movies. Some of their notable films include: Shrek, Kung Fu Panda and Trolls. However, the studio is also reliable for producing the much loved Madagascar franchise.

To date, the Madagascar franchise is made up of three films — Madagascar, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa and Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted. Combining all three of the movie's box office totals, the franchise has made over $1 billion dollars, and that figure is expected to rise sooner than you think. That's right — it appears a fourth #Madagascar film is currently in the pipeline.

Recapping the 'Madagascar' Franchise

The Madagascar films follow the journey of four close friends: Alex the lion, Marty the zebra, Gloria the hippo, and Melman the giraffe. Over the course of three films the wild animals escape Central Park Zoo and wind up in Madagascar, where they bump into new friends King Julian and his lemur subjects.

Following unexpected events on the island, they attempt to fly back to America, only to crash land in Africa.Things don't exactly pan out well for them in Africa, so they continue their journey back to New York via Europe, causing quite a lot of mayhem in the process.

Despite the gang finally making it back to New York at the end of the third installment, they decide to finally ditch their original plan (going back to the zoo) and stay with the circus crew they met on their journey home. Of course, this left the franchise wide open, which means the directors of the last three films (Eric Darnell and Tom McGrath) can pick up the franchise at any point.

Everything You Need to Know About 'Madagascar 4'

Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted was the highest grossing film in the franchise, as it made a staggering $746 million at the global box office. Following its success, directors Darnell and McGrath are keen to keep the franchise going longer than expected.

First reported by comingsoon.net, DreamWorks intended to release the fourth movie on May 18, 2018. However, DreamWorks has recently encountered major financial problems, meaning the release date had to be pushed back to May 23, 2019. Why have we heard so little regarding the next movie, as it's been almost six years since the last time we saw the gang join the circus.

Despite the movie's release date getting pushed back, the good news is the original cast, Ben Stiller (Alex), Chris Rock (Marty), David Schwimmer (Melman) and Jada Pinkett Smith (Gloria), will all be making an epic comeback to get the next movie on the road.

The Last In the Franchise

Unnamed sources claim that Madagascar 4 will be the final movie in the franchise written by Eric Darnell. The next chapter will see the zoo animals deciding on their future and what to do with the rest of their lives.

The four animals realize that each of them belongs in different places and habitats, and that's where they want to spend the rest of their lives. It's also said that Alex will meet his mate, making the story more complicated. But, who this mate is and how that fits in with the story remains confidential. Furthermore, the four friends begin to realize that "friendship does not only mean going to adventures together but also true friendship will stand the test of time and distance."

With little news beyond that, fans of the animated franchise can only speculate what they will see in the final installment. We already know the fourth movie will be just as wacky as the other three, making it another fun romp for audiences. While waiting for the next installment, you can catch the hilarious King Julian in his very own Netflix series All Hail King Julien.
