Is a Major Spider-Man Character Set to Cameo in ‘Homecoming’?

It seems that we might be seeing another unexpected major character set to cameo in 'Spider-Man: Homecoming'.

Prior to Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man (Tom Holland)'s role was shrouded in secrecy; this trait has certainly been carried over onto the production of Spider-Man: Homecoming. Apart from a few scant details, we know relatively little about which stories are being adapted and which characters will show up.

Thanks to that scoop from SchmoesKnow the other day, we’re getting a clearer idea –or rather ideas — about who the confirmed actors and actresses might be playing. However, if Schmoes’s report is correct, it seems that we might be seeing another previously unexpected character in Homecoming, whose appearance may have serious repercussions for our webbed wonder.

Curious? Then let’s take a look!

The main source of excitement for Spider-Man: Homecoming is definitely based around seeing the hero integrating into the ever-growing MCU. Whilst it will be great to see Spidey interacting with some already established characters (i.e. Robert Downey Jr’s Tony Stark), we shouldn’t forget that our webbed wonder has a brilliant supporting cast of his own to share. Indeed, Schmoes believe that someone crucial will be making a cameo in the movie:

“... there will be a surprise appearance from a character that is central to the Spider-Man mythos, one who will play a larger role in upcoming films. We just can’t confirm who it is at this time.”

Hoo-boy! The fact that this character is “central” to Spider-Man has certainly made our ears prick up!

Marvel Studios

Who could it be? And why are they important? And what could their role be in future films? It’s a testament to the talent over at Marvel that there are so many great Spidey characters that fit this description. So which are the most likely candidates...?

Norman Osborn- The Green Goblin

Marvel Comics

Though he’s appeared in both cinematic iterations of Spider-Man, he’s probably the number one choice on this list for hundreds of fans...and not without reason. Osborn is a definite contender because of his massive role in Peter’s life. As his number one villain, Osborn has long plagued Spider-Man, since our hero has long prevented the spread of the Green Goblin’s criminal empire. So personal is their rivalry, that Osborn famously murdered Gwen Stacy, and orchestrated the dreaded 'Clone Saga' among many other things. Their infamous and long-standing relationship has been reflected in nearly every incarnation. In the Ultimate Universe, Osborn even inadvertently gave Spider-Man his powers.

Could this be his role in the MCU? If they are following the Ultimate Universe as closely as John Watts has implied, then it’s definitely possible. But Osborn might also be introduced to influence the rest of the MCU. After all, in several of his incarnations (such as The Spectacular Spider-Man TV series) he created many other super villains. Plus there’s always the chance that he could take control of S.H.I.E.L.D. and persecute other heroes, if the 'Dark Reign' arc was adapted.

Eddie Brock- Venom

Marvel Comics

Another firm favorite, Venom is another character which may just have sprung to the forefronts of people’s minds when they read the quote from Schmoes. As a dark and twisted reflection of Spider-Man, fans clamored to see him onscreen well before they were disappointed by him in Spider-Man 3. After Topher Grace’s incarnation, whose loosely adapted origin was rushed and shoehorned into the movie, it would make sense for Marvel and Sony to bring new Venom into the MCU and wipe away the bad memories.

But the rumor suggests that it would only be a cameo appearance in Homecoming; could we therefore expect to see either Eddie Brock in his days as a journalist, or perhaps the beginnings of Peter’s relationship with the symbiote, before it bonded with Brock? Again, this is a very possible idea which certainly has its merits.

Marvel are always seeking to expand and interconnect their cinematic universe, and now that they have developed the galactic arena in Guardians of the Galaxy, the symbiote’s origins could be closely, and compellingly, adapted.

Wilson Fisk/ The Kingpin

The massive, and masterful, lord of all organised crime in New York has often come to blows with Spidey in the comics. Why not the films? Kingpin is already a part of the MCU! With Vincent D'Onofrio giving us a brilliant portrayal in Netflix’s Daredevil series, the stage is set for a fantastic showdown between Spider-Man and the Kingpin in later movies. Spider-Man would have surely come across him in his city-based crime fighting, right?

However, this scenario is very unlikely, given that there are massive gulfs and restrictions between the television and movie arenas of Marvel...but even so, that can’t stop us from thinking how awesome it would be!

Though we’ve been exploring the potential super villains that might cameo in Homecoming, we haven’t considered another aspect of Peter Parker’s life – the non-costumed characters. Indeed, earlier in their article, the Schmoes stressed that one of the mystery villains didn’t have superpowers...so could this other important character also not have superpowers?

We haven’t seen a particularly grouchy newspaper editor in cinemas for years. It’s been nearly a decade since Spider-Man 3 came out, and some vague allusions to him in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 just won’t cut it! With a rebooted Spidey, the time is certainly ripe for this hilarious and long-standing character to make a cinematic comeback and verbally harass the heroes of New York and beyond.

Richard and/or Mary Parker

They may be dead by the time of Homecoming, but it doesn’t mean that they can’t still appear in some small way! As the most important people in Peter’s life (besides Uncle Ben or Aunt May), could we see them return to our movie screens? As part of the MCU, will they now be reinterpreted as been fully formed Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. operating sometime in the past?

Wait, they were secret agents? Certainly, in the comics they were once a formidable duo of C.I.A. operatives who crossed paths with the likes of Wolverine and Nick Fury, and who later, on the orders of the second Red Skull, met their tragic demise.

Again, there is a lot of potential for movie-to-movie integration, especially if something from the Parkers' days as spies comes back to bite the rest of the MCU, and their son, Spider-Man. They are probably among the most unlikely candidates on this list, since they were last seen only a couple of years ago in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. But then again, we just can’t rule out anything with Marvel Studios!

Or Even... Uncle Ben?

In light of what Schmoes disclosed about Aunt May, could the mystery character be Peter’s Uncle Ben? He was alluded to in Civil War after all, and the character is crucial to Spidey’s tragic learning curve. Ben Parker may be dead by the time of Homecoming, but a Batman v Superman-esque flashback to before and during his encounter with a robber may feature somewhere in the run-time.

It’s not outside the realms of possibility. His death certainly hasn’t stopped him from popping up in the comics now and again, through visions, magic and alternate realities. Kevin Feige has said that Homecoming will ape the movies of John Waters, which, whilst comedic, definitely have touching sentimental moments. Seeing May and Peter still dealing with the loss of Uncle Ben as they attempt to move on in their relationships would certainly fit into this adopted tone.

Who will mysteriously cameo in Homecoming? Unfortunately, we can't say because we just don't know, but the fact that they are going to reappear throughout the course of the MCU's Spider-Man series is certainly giving us food for thought. Good character or bad, friend or foe, the world of Tom Holland's Spider-Man becomes more and more expansive and exciting by the day!
