Is [Spoiler] REALLY in 'Civil War'?

Did the Funko Pop! Vinyl of Giant-Man in the 'Captain America: Civil War' range spoil the film, or is this all a red herring?

Okay, a bit of speculation on my part, with the potential for mild spoilers. Don't say I didn't warn you. Even though you would argue the merchandise already spoiled it!

To what am I alluding, you may ask? Allow me to enlighten you. A few months ago Marvel were criticised by some fans due to the release of a Pop! Vinyl of Giant-Man in the Captain America: Civil War range. Fans were disappointed because they felt it was a huge spoiler as there is no sign of the big guy in any of the trailers. This was only increased when various Lego sets contained Giant-Man as a "minifigure". I was thinking about this and my mind started to wander - I started to think, what if this is all a red herring...

But, If He Is Lego He Has To Be In The Film, Right?

You'd think that, but you would be wrong. I started to think about this one because I remembered the Lego that accompanied Iron Man 3. Before it came out, the speculation was heavy that the main villain of the film would be Iron Man's arch-nemesis - The Mandarin. All of the trailers showed Ben Kingsley being very menacing and threatening towards Tony Stark. But as we now know, things did not pan out like that. In a huge twist (that divided opinion), Ben Kingsley's Mandarin was revealed to be a struggling actor by the name of Trevor Slattery. He was a fabrication created by the true villain of the film, Aldrich Killian.

It's a trick!

But what does this have to do with anything? Well, let me tell you. In the build up to the film, Marvel released images of the Lego sets that would be based on Iron Man 3 (as is now common practice) and there was one that stuck out - Iron Man vs The Mandarin: The Ultimate Showdown. The other sets seemed to be based on events in the film. By this point we had already seen Stark's mansion destroyed in the trailers and there was the Malibu Mansion Attack set to go along with this. Iron Man vs The Mandarin: The Ultimate Showdown was a set that I remember seeing articles online about with people saying it has spoiled the film... Oh how wrong they were!

Alex, Come On, It Could Totally Be True!

Yes, you are right! There is every chance that Ant-Man could gain the "Gi" in front of his name and evolve. He obviously has the capability to do it or else he would be stuck being the size of an ant. His suit can not only shrink, it can also revert him to normal size (also known as growing!). But there is also the possibility that the Ant-Man suit is designed so that he CAN'T grow any more than his normal size - the regulator prevents him shrinking beyond a certain point, perhaps it works the same when he grows.

One disc makes you larger the other makes you small

BUT there is a way that Ant-Man could become Giant-Man - by bypassing the regulator on his suit. Scott Lang is given a number of gadgets along with the Ant-Man suit, including small discs that can cause other objects to shrink or grow. He actually uses one of these discs to escape the Quantum Realm and return to normal size. We see a number of other objects grow thanks to these discs - a garden gnome, Cassie's Thomas the Tank Engine toy and even one of the ants. Eagle-eyed viewers will also note the blue glow when Scott attaches the disc to his belt in the Quantum Realm - a nod to Giant-Man in the comics.

Is THIS the birth of Giant Man???

Will He Appear?

It is perfectly plausible that we could be seeing a lot more of Scott Lang in Captain America: Civil War. It could happen accidentally during the fighting; maybe he is hit by one of his own enlarging discs, or it could be an ability that Scott has deliberately perfected. Either way, I am looking forward to seeing more of Ant-Man as I thought that Ant-Man was excellent. We already have the shot in the trailer of Ant-Man riding on one of Hawkeye's arrows; who is to say that instead of showing EVERYTHING in the film, Marvel might actually spring a surprise and give the people Giant-Man?
