Is 'Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt' In The Midst Of A Robot Revolution?

Kimmy Schmidt is a cult survivor full of hope and optimism — she starts a new life in New York City and makes some quirky friends along the way. What she and her friends don't realize, however, is that their world is gradually being taken over by robots. Or, at least, this is the case according to a fan theory.

This theory first appeared on Reddit by fans of the comedy series. They point out that the robots called Yuko are seen frequently on the show, yet the characters don't notice because they're so focused on social media or other everyday problems. The series does engage in casually commentary on social issues, but a robotic uprising is not one of them — not yet anyway.

So What is the Proof?

The Yuko robot was first introduced in a Season 1 episode where Jacqueline's husband reveals the Yuko 3000 at a party. He describes her as:

"...bring a technology to the market that will change the face of health care, the service industry and one day, I truly believe, prostitution."

Yuko started working menial jobs such as dog walking and setting up decorations for parties (hopefully, prostitution is not one of those jobs). Then she transitioned into bigger careers, like being a news anchor. Yuko even stole Kimmy's crossing guard job in Season 3. Seems that artificial intelligence is slowly taking the place of human workers, but no one on the show has any fears.

Why Is No One Freaking Out?

The characters in Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt don't talk much about the Yuko robots. The only time Yuko is mentioned in the show is at the party and then when Jacqueline and Titus kill one because Jacqueline suspects the robot of cheating with her then-husband. Aside from that, people on the show are either oblivious to what's going on with the uprising or just don't want to acknowledge it. Ironically, that could be due to the increase use of technology and social media. Everyone's face is glued to a screen — they don't notice what's going on in the real world, unless it's written on the internet. So, if robot revolution were to happen, perhaps nobody would bat an eye at it. It might even be seen as normal!

The Social Commentary on the Show

Most episodes of Kimmy Schmidt give a lesson on social issues like equal pay, white privilege, feminism or the offensive name of the Redskins football team. What's interesting, however, is that those social issues seem minor compared to a robot revolution. The fan on Reddit who presented the robot theory even commented on the "self-involved society" in Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. It means that perhaps the characters are more focused on what happens to them rather than what happens around them. A robot takeover is not directly linked to the stories of our heroes, so for now it is seen only as a running gag.

The show's heroes must put down their phones and look around them. Yuko robots are taking over their jobs, and the world!
