Is Venom Joining the MCU or His Own Universe?

If Venom is coming back to the big screen, here are three possible appearance he could make.

Over the past year, rumors had been circulating of a potential Venom spinoff movie being produced by Sony Pictures, but there hadn't been any indication of a Venom film in development. Then out of nowhere, Tom Rothman, Chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment, made a soft announcement that the Venom project would be revealed soon.

There weren't any other details, but — if Venom is coming back to the big screen — there are only so many ways for it to plausibly happen...

1. Venom (Or A Symbiote) Cameos In Spider-Man: Homecoming

Probably the best method for Venom to be introduced would be a cameo in Spider-Man: Homecoming, or at least the Venom-symbiote might appear in a lab somewhere. If the symbiote comes into contact first with Peter Parker instead of his fellow Daily Bugle contributor Eddie Brock, we could see the familiar storyline of Peter Parker being corrupted by his dark suit, which also appeared in the Spider-Man: Homecoming event of Marvel Comics.

(In the comics, Venom is actually Eddie Brock, a normal guy who comes into contact with an alien parasite from the planet Klyntar. The alien parasite is known as the symbiote, and it consumes the body of its host, turning the host into a mindless being under its control.)

Not all the components of the Spider-Man: Homecoming comic book event are expected to be used in the upcoming film, but with much of it being mirrored, Peter Parker donning the symbiote suit wouldn't be a total surprise. At the same time, audiences probably don't want a retread of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3.

But since Peter Parker obtained the Venom-symbiote during the Secret Wars event...

2. Venom Comes To The MCU In Avengers: Infinity War

In the most plausible scenario, Venom will join the MCU in a manner similar to Spider-Man during Captain America: Civil War by being given a brief intro to the universe, while at the same time, making a strong impression. And for a character like Venom, it wouldn't be too difficult to make an impression on the MCU and create some problems for everyone who inhabits the MCU.

Some iteration of Venom could appear during Avengers: Infinity War when the Avengers reach their cosmic battlefield with Thanos. We have no idea of what else we'll see when the Avengers take on Thanos and his minions, and we don't know where their war will take place either. For all we know, Avengers: Infinity War could take place on Thanos's isolated planet seen in the post-credits scene of The Avengers (2012) or on another distant planet where the symbiotes reside.

In that scenario, any line of events could be followed by one of the symbiotes coming into contact with one of Earth's Mightiest, or Spider-Man himself.

3. A Standalone Venom Movie

Probably my favorite direction, and presumably the direction Sony Pictures is taking with Venom, is for him to be featured in his own standalone film. There would be so much room for development of the Venom character, including potential exploration of where Venom originates from.

(In comparison to the other symbiotes found on their home planet, the Venom symbiote is one of the more mild-tempered ones. The Carnage symbiote, on the other hand, is known to turn its host into a psychotic murderer — and if you think Carnage is bad, he's just the tip of the iceberg.)

There's a variety of ways that Sony Pictures could utilize Venom; he has an entire mythology built into his character separate from Spider-Man. Eddie Brock was the first to take on the moniker of Venom, then it fell to Mac Gargan, and was later passed on to Flash Thompson, who became Agent Venom in the comics.

There's also Toxin, Anti-Venom, and several genetically manufactured symbiotes who came along later in the comics — any of whom could also be joining Venom in the current project in development.

If the Venom standalone film does happen, an exploration of Venom's origins will very likely introduce more symbiotes alongside him, since a loyal portrayal of Venom's origins would have to include a depiction of the symbiote planet. Venom may even be set up to take on an opposing symbiote in the film, namely Carnage. The two characters have been known to clash in the pages of Marvel Comics, so it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility for Venom to come face to face with Carnage on-screen.

Considering Rothman's word of an official announcement coming soon, we'll just have to wait to know how the Venom character will be introduced to the MCU, if he's introduced to the MCU at all.
