Is Wolverine Responsible for the Death of the X-Men in Logan?

The trailer for Logan debuted gave us a glimpse into the future timeline beyond the happy ending of X-Men: Days Of Future Past, which saw Wolverine returned to his bed in the X-Mansion with all of the X-Men revived and reunited.

However, the setting of Logan (like the post-apocalyptic scenes of DOFP) will also emphasize the fact that society has become a dystopia, just not comparable to the hellish level of the Sentinel program. One of the most-asked questions surrounding Logan has to do with what took place in the interim.

Where Are the X-Men?

Considering that the X-Men appear to be nonexistent during the timeline of Logan, their absence could be due to the X-Men meeting off-screen deaths at some point. Those claims sound quite speculative at the moment, but let's take a closer look at some of the dialogue in the Logan trailer, which provides the evidence we need to conclude that the X-Men are dead — and what's worse, Wolverine may be the one responsible.

During the trailer, we can hear Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart) speaking, and his dialogue hints at something quite sinister taking place:

"Logan, what did you do?"

Those words paired with an image of Wolverine's trembling bloody fist indicate he's done something shocking enough to make Charles Xavier question his actions. Xavier's words don't mean he's actually asking what Wolverine/Logan did; he can see what Wolverine has done. Xavier seems to be asking him in that manner because he's in disbelief.

In terms of determining what Wolverine/Logan did, it may be easy considering the next screenshots in the trailer depict Wolverine drinking heavily in the background of a funeral, along with Wolverine's dialogue in the trailer alluding to the fate of X-Men as well:

"Mutants. (pause) They're gone now."

If it's not clear, the connotation to Wolverine's mention of the mutants being gone, likely means they're all dead — except for Charles Xavier, Caliban, X-23 and himself. With that in mind, it's possible Wolverine is responsible for killing the X-Men; that would add some context to Xavier's words in the trailer.

A similar event took place in the comics, specifically the Old Man Logan timeline, which depicted Wolverine killing every X-Man after Mysterio infiltrated his mind and made Wolverine believe that he was fighting his enemies, inciting a berserker rage — when, in fact, Wolverine was slaughtering his friends.

Logan could depict Wolverine undergoing some type of manipulation that sees him slaughter the X-Men in a similar manner, leaving only him and Charles left. It's also possible that the trailer has given us some misdirection, since the whole point of DOFP was bringing the original X-Men back to life, but right now it's not looking good for Logan's mutant teammates.
