This post contains spoilers for The Flash Season 3.

The Season 3 finale for The Flash is right around the corner, and potential spoilers have been making their way around the Internet. Some might be true, others might be unfounded rumors, but one has been confirmed by executive producer Andrew Kreisberg: a major recurring character is returning for the finale.

With this revelation came a flurry of speculations. Could it be Firestorm (Robbie Amell)? Another sighting of Jay Garrick (John Wesley Shipp)? Of course, we won't know who actually shows up until the finale airs, but there is one character that hasn't been mentioned often, who could definitely be considered major: Zoom.

At the end of Season 2, Zoom was attacked by time wraiths, but he wasn't killed. In fact, when talking to TV Guide, actor Teddy Sears told us exactly what happened to Zoom and why we shouldn't be surprised about seeing him again:

"Zoom has been transformed into Black Flash, who has quite a place in the mythology of The Flash. He's like the grim reaper for speedsters. Andrew Kreisberg, the head writer and EP, has talked about their interest in having a Black Flash return at some point in the series."

A grim reaper for speedsters? Sounds like something Barry Allen could use to defeat Savitar. Even though Zoom isn't a big fan of the Flash, he presumably wouldn't be returning with a quest for more speed, and since Savitar is connected to the Speed Force and subject to its rules, one would think he wouldn't be able to combat a speedster designed to kill him.

Last month, Kresiberg, when talking with EW, possibly pointed a finger at Zoom when discussing the plan for the show:

"There’s always a plan on every one of these shows. We set stuff up throughout the years that’s going to be paid off. "

Instead of dying, Zoom became a villain that Barry would need in the future — that certainly sounds like a set-up for later seasons, doesn't it?

All season long on DC's Legends of Tomorrow, Eobard Thawne (Reverse Flash) has been trying to outrun Black Flash, so we know that he's still serving a purpose in the Arrowverse. And while The Flash could use the Grim Reaper without bringing back Teddy Sears, where would be the fun in that?

With all of this speculation, there's a hitch that might prevent Sears from resuming his role even though he wants to return. Sears is starring in Fox's 24: Legacy:

"It would be a lot of fun to drop back into that world. We'll just have to see if the guys on the other end feel the same way. It sounds like they do, but it's funny — now I belong to Fox, so there's lots of people that would have to give a thumbs up. But I really hope so."

So, will we see Zoom back on The Flash? Viewers will just have to wait until the Season 3 finale on May 23, 2017.
