It's All Connected: Marvel's Stan Lee Defenders Video Has A Sneaky Captain America Easter Egg
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has given us many things over the past decade, including solidifying easter eggs as standard practice in cinematic culture.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has given us many things over the past decade, including solidifying easter eggs as standard practice in cinematic culture. The MCU weren't the first to use Easter Eggs to nod to other movies and pop-culture touchpoints, but they certainly upped the ante. Now, Easter Eggs have become standard across various forms of media, and are often the subject of endless debate and discussion. With so many projects still on the books and so much material to link up, it's no wonder that fans around the world scour the MCU to uncover fun, sneaky links across movies, comics and TV shows.
Earlier this week, an international trailer was released for Marvel Netflix's shows, featuring the one-and-only Stan Lee as narrator. Lee talks about what it means to be a hero while scenes from Luke Cage, Daredevil, Jessica Jones & Iron Fist play out in the background.
What many have missed in this trailer is a glorious Easter Egg in form of a poster, linking to the events prior to Captain America: Civil War. In the blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment, we see a large poster pinned next to the Iron Fist billboard. On that poster is an advert for Stark Industries, showing Captain America's shield sitting amidst the rubble of a destroyed city, with the words "America to the rescue" printed above.
Seeing Cap's shield in the rubble is a good baseline for where we'll find The Defenders in the MCU timeline; namely, before the events of Captain America: Civil War and the Sokovia Accords. With Captain America being branded a "war criminal" after the events of Civil War, it would be surprising for Stark Industries to use his iconic shield to promote American business and values. However, the poster is only shown from Lee's perspective and isn't drawn from official Defenders footage, so it's possible this fun little nod exists only in the commercial, and outside of wider Marvel Netflix continuity.
This isn't the first #MCU link that the Netflix-verse has made. You may remember references to the Hulk and Thor as far back as #Daredevil Season 1, and subtle nods to the wider movie continuity have been interwoven into the Netflix shows ever since. However, there have been any clear-cut crossovers, and #Netflix has always erred on the side of caution when it comes to making large scale nods towards the much broader MCU.
This is all a good reminder to fans that even though there isn't likely going to be a crossover event, like The Defenders appearing in Avengers: Infinity War, they're still working in the same universe. Keep your eyes peeled for more nods to the MCU movies when The Defenders premieres on Netflix on August 18th.
