It's Called Fashion, Darling: Concept Art Shows The Suits We Nearly Got For 'Batman V Superman'

Well, that certainly "suits" you, Master Bruce. As possibly one of the most famous wardrobes in all of popular culture, getting Batman's infamous Batsuit right should be top priority for any incoming director. For 78 years we have seen the Dark Knight spread his wings in a variety of weird and wonderful outfits, leaving everyone with their own personal favorite.

Whether it be the garish purples of the '60s TV series or the AR upgrade of the Nolan Era, I think we can all safely say that no one will be voting for Joel Schumacher's rubber nipple version. So, among the pack, just where does the current #DCEU iteration of the Batsuit slot into the range of fashion favorites and faux pas?

Suit or Boot

With a new man under the cowl, Warner Bros. introduced Ben Affleck as the new Bruce Wayne in 2016's #BatmanvSuperman. We saw director #ZackSnyder take influence from several comic books in the DC catalogue, and also famously adapt that clunky Frank Miller suit from The Dark Knight Returns. However, leaked concept art shows just how different our Caped Crusader could've looked in the superhero beat 'em up.

Concept artist Jerad S. Marantz shared some snaps of Bruce's winter wardrobe, but please note these originally came from costume designer Michael Wilkinson. While none of the below made it into that royal rumble between the Detective and the Last Son of Krypton, the ideas are intriguing nonetheless:

The biggest difference between these designs and the final product is the sleeker look Wilkinson seemed to be going for. These Batsuits are a lot more fitted, in line with your typical Superman suit. They would've certainly showed off Affleck's bulging physique, but presumably didn't make the final cut for practicality reasons. Sure, it may be great to be able to bounce a coin off Batman's pecs, but that won't help make up for kevlar plating against bullets and blades.

To be honest, the concept art looks like something that wouldn't be too out of place in the likes of Batman Begins or Rocksteady's Arkham games. However, going with a battered and bruised Bruce, it seems right that Snyder settled on something a little more heavy duty. Interestingly though, Wilkinson's designs do feature the shorter Batman ears that made it into BvS, and also solves that audible mystery. Here, we see some tiny little holes to help our Dark Knight hear the approach of any goons or a certain superpowered Kryptonians.

Those who haven't tried to push Snyder's Batman v Superman out of their minds will know that he showcased three very different suits. There was your day to day Gotham Knight suit, the desert faring "Knightmare" suit, and that armored version that wouldn't look out of place in a Robocop revival. Let's put it this way, I wouldn't fancy my chances against any of the concept designs compared to Snyder's armored suit.
