It's Not Only Jean Grey: Another X-Man Is Coming Back from the Dead in Marvel Comics

Young Man Logan Is Back

X-Men fans have long suspected Wolverine was going to return this year — the original Wolverine prime, not the time-displaced Old Man Logan. Back in February, Editor-In-Chief Axel Alonso dropped a cryptic reference when he talked about major Marvel mysteries that would be resolved as part of "Marvel Legacy":

"Could 'O.G.' Thor be worthy again? How long can Hydra Cap keep his secret? Did Bruce Banner have a contingency plan for his contingency plan? How dead is Logan? Is the Marvel Universe better off with Tony Stark off the board? [Laughs] These are the questions we have been contemplating."

There was no doubt in anybody's mind that Alonso was giving hints as to the future direction of the Marvel Universe. Since then, we've seen "Secret Empire" bring the HydraCap issue to a head, and there have already been hints that Jason Aaron's long-running Thor plots are about to come to a head.

Now, Alonso has officially told ComicBook.com that Wolverine's about to return in this week's #MarvelLegacy one-shot. What's more, Logan is packing more firepower than ever before. The one-shot will introduce him as the bearer of an Infinity Stone! As Alonso commented:

"Yes, Logan is back from the dead. After three years of a Logan-free Marvel Universe, Logan is back, claws popped and ready for action. How he came back, why he came back, and just how he came into possession of that Infinity Stone are part of a fascinating story that's going to unveil soon, and in some unusual places."

One of those "unusual places" is undoubtedly All-New Guardians of the Galaxy, given the team is currently on a quest to hunt down the Infinity Stones.

It's so very appropriate that writer Jason Aaron gets to bring Wolverine back from the dead. His career began in 2002 when he won a talent competition and wound up writing an eight-page Wolverine back-up script. Nobody was particularly surprised when he returned to Marvel in 2007, helming a popular Wolverine: Weapon X series. Little by little, Aaron became one of the main talents in the #XMen franchise, but he always kept a focus on his beloved Wolverine. It was Aaron who launched the humorous, off-beam Wolverine and the X-Men series back in 2011.

Meanwhile, fans were already thrilled to see Aaron unite with one of the comic book industry's most beloved artists. Esad Ribic's work shone through in 2015's Secret Wars miniseries, but he also has form with Wolverine; he was artist on the "Alpha" and "Omega" issues of 2013's "Battle of the Atom" X-Men event.

When we last saw #Wolverine, his healing factor had been neutralized by a sentient virus from the Microverse, and he'd subsequently been entombed in liquid adamantium. How did he escape this fate?

The answer probably lies in the Infinity Stone he bears, and it's surely no coincidence that the Infinity Stones are moving to center-stage in the #MarvelLegacy era. After all, next year we've got the biggest #Marvel blockbuster event of all hitting the big screen, as Thanos the Mad Titan gathers the Stones to himself.
