Avengers: Infinity War is set to embrace the cosmic side of the MCU like never before, but as James Gunn is looking beyond even that. The writer and director of Guardians of the Galaxy is currently working on the script for the threequel, with the intent to lay the foundations for literally decades of Marvel movies.

Speaking at Hasbro HasCon, Gunn revealed that he's going to be focusing more on the character of Rocket Raccoon in the upcoming movie:

"As you know, the MCU is one way of processing these characters. 616 is a different one. We are going to learn more about where Rocket comes from in the coming sagas. It’s going to be a little different from the comics. We already know a lot about from where he came from. It’s a little bit more horrible than what it is in the comics when you come down to it. We will learn more about that."

Given that Gunn is currently working on #GuardiansOfTheGalaxy3, it likely means that Rocket's past will become a part of that plot. This year's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 focused on Star-Lord's family and the tortured relationship between Nebula and Gamora, so it's about time that the spotlight is given to Rocket for his next film.

In the comics, Rocket comes from the planet Halfworld. An abandoned colony for the mentally ill, Halfworld's scientists experimented on animals to turn them into sentient 'companions' for the inmates. Rocket actually became the chief 'ranger' of Halfworld, protecting the colony from threats. Along the way, he started a relationship with another sentient animal called Lylla.

The first #GuardiansOfTheGalaxy implied that this origin has been largely absorbed into the MCU. In one key scene, the Xandarians put Rocket in front of a camera and take a look at his past offences. We're told that Rocket comes from Halfworld, and Lylla is identified as one of his "known associates."

But here's the catch; back in June, Gunn revealed that he was actually considering the idea of breaking his own canon;

"The Nova Corps has information about each of the characters coming up on their machinery. Those things are something that your average viewer doesn't see at all. But there's a lot of background I put into those things about who they've worked with, where they are from, what's going on. And it's one of those things that I'm thinking about changing."

Gunn's latest comment, that Rocket's MCU origin will be "a little different from the comics," seems to dovetail with this. It looks as though Rocket's origin is being rewritten for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

They may be steeped in humor, but the Guardians of the Galaxy movies are all heart. The first film somehow made us care about this "bunch of A-holes," and the second left us weeping as we watched the funeral of Yondu Udonta. Whatever Rocket's MCU origin may be, the fact that Gunn describes it as "a little bit more horrible than what it is in the comics" suggests it's going to pack a real emotional punch.
