Jason Fuchs Teases On DC's 'Lobo' Film!

Back in March, The Wrap reported that Wonder Woman screenwriter Jason Fuchs had been approached to write the script for the long-delayed Lobo film. The film's been in development limbo since 2009, when Guy Ritchie was first announced as director (he's long since left), so it was exciting to see some movement. Since then, things have been pretty quiet - until today, when Fuchs released this on his Instagram:

For Brad Peyton (another name who briefly became Lobo's director), there's a simple reason why the film has floundered.

“I think what’s happening with DC is that they have prioritized what they need to make first in order to kind of lay the foundations for the DC Universe. This is what I believe is happening just from what they’ve been taking about. They’re talking about ‘Justice League,’ ‘Batman v Superman,’ and going into ‘Flash,’ ‘Wonder Woman,’ and ‘Aquaman.’ Those are kind of the pillars of that universe.”

It may also be that, although Peyton was happy with the script, DC wasn't. According to The Wrap, Fuchs has ditched the previous versions of the script, starting from scratch. He's got a fun concept to play around with; Lobo is a brutal alien mercenary and bounty-hunter, very much the antihero. He'd be called foul-mouthed, except most of his swear words are in alien languages, so the film could conceivably still be PG-13.

What plots could Fuchs draw on for 'Lobo'?

Don't look to Lobo for a serious plot - popular stories have included his attacking the JLWB (Justice League of Wanna-Bes)! Do, however, look to Lobo for a lot of humor - of the kind immortalized in Deadpool - and a whole heap of action.

Assuming the film will be part of the DC Extended Universe (which seems to be a safe assumption), it's possible we'll see Lobo going head-to-head with one of his few recurring targets - Superman. Given DC Film's full slate, it's safe to say Lobo will occur after Justice League, and it's pretty certain that film will feature Superman's resurrection. Lobo is one of the few characters who can hold his own against the Man of Steel, and even developed a grudging respect for him. Lobo's reaction to Superman's death in the early '90s was one of his strongest character moments.

More likely, though, is the possibility that Lobo could be used to add a cosmic element to the DCEU. He operates on an intergalactic scale, meaning his story could feature practically any cameo Fuchs wants to give a shot. One of his most notable allies is Guy Gardner, and this could potentially be a way to develop the Green Lantern Corps in the DCEU.

In all honesty, it's far too soon to do anything more than guess about Lobo - the film could well be PG-13 (as it was aimed to be when first announced), or even R-rated (after the success of Deadpool). Still, it's exciting to see that DC hasn't forgotten the Main Man - he still holds a place in their plans!
