'Jessica Jones' Season 2 Review

It was much anticipated, but did it live up to the hype?

Superheroes have dominated our media thanks, in part, to the plethora of content that Marvel Studios pushes out. One of the latest to come from them is season 2 of Jessica Jones on Netflix.

Now, season 1 of Jessica Jones was a hit. A complex hero with a messed up past, compelling secondary characters, and a villain that was genuinely terrifying. But could season 2 follow up that stellar debut of the character?

I would say kind of.

Now, some said it was boring. I didn't find it this way. I would say that this season is a lot more about the characters then about a villain that must be stopped. It's about Jessica's relationship with her past. It's about Trish's desire for power. It's about Jerry's need for control. It's about Malcolm's—well, I'm not entirely sure what the deal with Malcom was. I thought it seemed like real life in many ways. The relationships are messy. The people make the same mistakes over and over. And not everything is resolved.

Now, a few problems with it. It definitely had its slow moments. It's not action packed like some of the other Marvel Netflix shows, but you don't necessarily go to Jessica Jones for the action. But I did have moments of wishing Luke Cage would come in and bring some life, because everything was so grime. I also thought it strange that the events of The Defenders were not even mentioned in any sort of way. She encountered a crazy ninja army and that doesn't impact her life at all?

Also, at moments, the characters get irritating. I found myself wishing they would all just sit down and get on the same page. But, like I said, I felt like this season had slices of real life in it, and very rarely in real life do people actually sit down and get on the same page.

So while it was slow at moments, and the characters at times were frustrating, I found Jessica Jones season 2 to be good follow-up. No, it doesn't have an outstanding villain like Kilgrave (though the episode he showed up in was one of my favorites), but this season was about Jessica and how she needed to move forward. She needed hope that her life could be different. Though she lost her mother, friend/sister, and her employee, she still is working at rebuilding her life, and the last episode shows a glimpse of that.
