For many years I have wondered myself if it were possible to recreate the park first imagined in Michael Crichton's novel Jurassic Park, the amazing advances in technology with the cloning of animals now being possible, it begs the question of it possibly happening. If we look at the world now and the world of bringing animals back, we can see that there are animals being cloned that were once extinct, for instance the wooly mammoth which is attempted to be cloned.
First we're going to consider the island(s) that you would need to purchase in order to build this massive park. The islands of Isla Nublar and Isla Sorna known as Site A and Site B respectively, are the two islands that are going to be the site for this. Isla Nublar is the island used in the first novel and film, the island is covered in lush vegetation and covered by fog due to the water and climate of the island. It's estimated that the island is around 22 square-miles, compared to site two which is doubled of this at 44 square-miles. The estimated cost of these islands are $10,000,000! This is a massive cost, and thats just for the islands not for any other costs involved in the park.
Now you have your island, you now need to hire staff for the island, a genetic scientist costs around $200,000, you'll also need animal caretakers ($64,000), paleontologists ($80,000), computing engineers ($154,000), and of course lawyers ($300,000). The total approximate cost is around $7.9 million.
Now we need to think about the cloning of the dinosaurs, a real life company called Bio Arts, clones dogs for $150,000 per dog, so multiply that by 50 for the 50 different species of animals and adding a few more research phases and we have $8.5 million. It's also estimated that the extraction of amber cost is around $9 million.
The construction of the park will cost something like $1.5 billion, as this is the same amount that some of the biggest theme parks cost to be built like Disney. Disney spends around $11 billion a year in park operating costs which is around $30 million a day. Therefore the cost of feeding the dinosaurs and making them nurtured would cost around $300 million a year, this number comes from the cost to maintain a very large zoo.
It totals to around $23,432,400,000 straight off, and recurring costs of $11,907,000,000 a year. So it's going to take a lot of ticket sales and customers to make it worth the investment, and good luck finding those investors.
But, Jack Horner has been trying to "construct" the dinosaur by using its ancestor a.k.a the chicken, and by doing so he's genetically engineered to, sort of, reactivate some of the previous traits of their ancestors, for example adding teeth, tails and even tails. Now, this by any means is no dinosaur, if anything it will just look like a chicken with a genetic anomaly but it does beg the question for the future. Will we just be able to create dinosaurs rather than going after the DNA of dinosaurs found in amber? I hope that in my lifetime either the cloning of animals has reached a point where we can bring back extinct animals, like the dodo, or the mammoth. But just because we can do something, doesn't mean that we should do it, there will be ethical repercussions and things never go to plan. If we create a dinosaur that has for millions of years been extinct, will its natural instincts kick in and create massive havoc like we have seen in the films and read in the books? After all, "Life finds a way."
