Just How Many Heroes Will Die in 'Avengers: Infinity War'?

The Comics Have Some Bad News for Your Favorite Characters

Avengers: Infinity War will feature a whopping number of Marvel Comics characters (possibly 67 main characters) and it's no secret that some of them are going to die. Could Iron Man bite the dust? Captain America? Fans have been speculating for months, and will be until April, but perhaps the comic books have the answer.

The movie seems to draw the most inspiration from 1991's #InfinityGauntlet storyline, in which Marvel's heroes go up against an all-powerful Thanos in space... and not all of 'em make it back alive. (Although there's a big twist ending.) Get your tissues ready and read on, 'cause here's who died in the comics

Hawkeye

  • How he dies in the comics: Thanos snaps his fingers and Hawkeye disappears
  • Odds he'll die in the movie: 8.5/10

Jeremy Renner himself has hinted at his character's potential demise, so this one might be a sure bet.

In the comic books, Thanos wants to please the woman he loves, Death herself, who realized that the number of beings currently alive in the universe was greater than the number of beings that had ever died. She didn't like that. So, she instructed Thanos to kill half the universe.

Tapping into the power of the Infinity Gauntlet, Thanos snapped his fingers, and 50 percent of every species on every planet was obliterated, along with Hawkeye and Sersi. Hawkeye hasn't really been the main focus of any of the movies so far, so his chance of survival isn't looking too good.

Spider-Man

  • How he dies in the comics: Beaten to death by Terraxia, Thanos's lover.
  • Odds he'll die in the movie: 2/10

Yes, we just went from Thanos loving Death to Thanos loving Terraxia. Here's why: being constantly ignored by Death drove Thanos to create another lover with his glove, whom he names Terraxia. She kills our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.

And the worst part of his death in the comics? It's not even front and center. While Thanos is dispatching Thor (see below how), Terraxia is bashing Spidey's brains in with a huge rock ... in the background. If you don't look close, you might even miss his death.

Could she kill Tom Holland's Peter Parker in Infinity War? He's young, and his death could fire up the rest of the heroes to take Thanos down, if there are any heroes left... but we also know that Holland is signed for a sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming, so this one is pretty unlikely.

Wong

  • How he dies in the comics: Vanishes along with the other half of the universe.
  • Odds he'll die in the movie: 5/10

Benedict Wong has been confirmed to reprise the role in Infinity War, and Wong's death would give Dr. Strange a reason to go all mystical on Thanos.

Black Panther

  • How he dies in the comics: Another victim of Thanos's snap.
  • Odds he'll die in the movie: 0/10

There's no viable reason to kill off T'Challa, especially after the incredibly profitable Black Panther, but you know how it works; producers don't ever really need a reason to kill characters off. This gets him a 100% chance of survival. Which is loads better than the entire Fantastic Four comic team, who along with Black Panther, weren't even granted a heroes' death. Just ... poof.

Scarlet Witch

  • How she dies in the comics: Thanos uses her own hex power against her.
  • Odds she'll die in the movie: 9/10

In the comics, the Scarlet Witch and Cyclops attack Thanos at the same time, and are taken out one right after the other. Cyclops dies when Thanos creates an unbreakable, airtight box around the X-Man, suffocating him.

Of course, the X-Men won't be in Infinity War, so Wanda Maximoff's fate may be different here. She could even save many of the heroes' butts as she's done in the past. But seeing how her BF Vision could very well bite the dust if he holds the final stone Thanos is looking for, her luck really could be running out.

Vision

  • How he dies in the comics: Thanos rips his electronic guts out.
  • Odds he'll die in the movie: 9/10

Fans have been speculating for awhile that Vision is a goner, although we don't know anything for sure. All we know is that he'll look a little different. We'll give him the same odds as Wanda; if one of them does actually die, then odds are the other might die avenging them.

Iron Man

  • How he dies in the comics: Terraxia beheads him. BRU-tal.
  • Odds he'll die in the movie: 10/10

Even Captain America himself has teased that Iron Man will die. With Robert Downey, Jr.'s time playing Iron Man in the MCU likely coming to an end, a great way for him to bow out would be sacrificing himself in the Infinity War. But damn, let's hope they find some other way for him to die other than a beheading.

Thor

  • How he dies in the comics: Thanos turns him to glass and shatters him. To death.
  • Odds he'll die in the movie: 7/10

Even though Thor made it out of Thor: Ragnarok alive, albeit one eye lighter, he'll have to face an even tougher battle against Thanos. Fun fact about Thor's not-so-fun comic book death? The hero Nova tries to stop Thanos from shattering Thor, but gets turned into Legos. Freaking Legos. Maybe Thanos's defeat will come when he steps on one of those little bastards barefoot.

Captain America

  • How he dies in the comics: Thanos breaks his neck with one backhanded punch.
  • Odds he'll die in the movie: 9/10

Like RDJ, Chris Evans's days as Cap are probably numbered; and this movie (or the sequel, #Avengers4) might be his curtain call. Seeing one or two of Earth's noblest heroes fall to save the galaxy would give a fitting closure to their battle in Civil War.

Spoiler Alert: But Will They Come Back To Life?

As you can see, a lot of Marvel heroes will die if #AvengersInfinityWar is comic book-accurate. As for the "big twist" I mentioned above? The ending of the comics is the old "use the all-powerful glove to put everything back the way they were" trick.

It turns out that Adam Warlock and the Silver Surfer are using Cap's fight with Thanos as a distraction for the Surfer to swoop in at light speed and grab the bejeweled glove off of Thanos's purple hand. All of Thanos's evil deeds are undone.

I hope that Infinity War doesn't go this route. If that's how the movie does it, and brings back all the dead heroes, then death will mean nothing in the MCU.

In the meantime, we'll be dying ourselves waiting until April 27, 2018!
