'Justice League' Review

The film that I have been waiting for since I was 4. Hell, I didn't even know about the Avengers until I was 7, so the JLA was my number one in terms of superhero team ups. I grew up watching the Justice League Animated Series so seeing it brought to life brings the little kid out of me.

I have to say, though I am very excited, I can't help but be very wary of the current cycle of DCEU films.

Man of Steel: the Superman film that brought the 'realistic' tones to the new DC movie universe. To me it was a little slow and lacked some sort of uplifting moments that I believe that a Superman movie should have.

Batman v Superman: the biggest disappointment they could have produced, that was luckily saved by Wonder Woman amongst the many many mistakes it had.

Suicide Squad: making Harley and Joker's relationship look romantic since 2016, along with using probably the WORST villain they had a pick of, with a side of a bad storyline.

Wonder Woman: the film that almost brought a tear to my eye because Patti Jenkins (the director) created a film that embodied the character and what she stands for so well, as well as sticking to the comic books in the process. Gal Gadot is the PERFECT Wonder Woman and you can fight me on that one.

My point being that they have made one solid film that fans loved and that was true to the character.

The early press screenings reviews have been let loose on the internet. There are mixed reviews.

Perri Nemiroff of Collider tweeted:

"Here it goes … #JusticeLeague is super thin and has some very weak CG but it’s got heart and a positive vibe that works. Overall, I had a pretty good time and am looking forward to seeing more of these characters."

Super thin, weak CG...okay, this is not getting my hopes up, and I usually trust Perri's judgement.

Jon Schnepp, also of Collider, tweeted:

"I saw #JusticeLeague and it's a bumpy amazing uneven bizarre wet clay event. The Flash & Wonder Woman stand out. It's a good start."

Uneven bizarre wet clay event? My nervous squeals are going to come out soon over the fear of it being bad. However, the mentioning of the Flash and Wonder Woman standing out gives me hope of strong and funny characters coming through.

I just can't wait to see it. Whether I am going to be disappointed or not (hopefully) I have been waiting for so long for this film. I love the Avengers and MCU but I want the DCEU to have a lil bit of spotlight. They have some amazing characters but, unlike Marvel, the directors of the movies with these characters don't get much creative freedom (thanks Warner Bros.), an example of this being that the original script for Suicide Squad, which sounded perfect, got cancelled because of the production company rejecting it and wanting what they wanted. This is the reason why the writers only had 6 weeks to come up with a script that turned out to be mediocre and in my opinion disrespectful to the characters. I am apprehensive.

My Opinion on the Justice League Movie

*spoilers ahead*

I actually really enjoyed it. It wasn't the disappointment I was hoping it to not be. The cast of the JL were the best part of the film hands down. They mesh so well together, which is what the JL should do. Yes, the characters have their conflicts with each other, but this is good character building. I LOVE THE FLASH. Ezra Miller to me was the best part of the entire movie. His fresh comedic value and timing gave me hope throughout the entire plot. I just wish there was more of him and his background story. For example, a scene was cut that was featured in the trailer where Barry Allen (the Flash) breaks through a window in slow motion in order to save his future love interest Iris West... WHY WAS THAT CUT OUT??

My whole opinion surrounding the idea of them cutting important scenes from the film is the only big negative thing I have to say about it. Warner Bros. head made the call to have the film under two hours long, due to the backlash they had over BvS being nearly three hours long. I get why they did this, however it didn't work in favour of Justice League. They cut scenes that made the movie make more sense. That made the audience understand the characters more. They make you question the film. Like where has Wonder Woman been for so long? How do people not know about her when she saves so many lives? How does she know that there is a terror attack in London when we are supposed to believe that she works at the Louvre? The cuts were so evident within the film. It seemed like one after the other it was: big event, big event, big event, and no fillers to do with the characters themselves.

While I am on the topic of negatives I'll carry on with the little niggly bits that I believe were bad, one being Superman's CGI cover up for his moustache... I sigh every time I think about it. During reshoots for JL Henry Cavill was already shooting another film which required his character to have a lil bit of lip hair, so he couldn't shave it off. The one thing I hate is how much people are using this against the film when really it's only in an after credit scene. Leading on to my next negative, it's also to do with Superman.

I hated how they brought him back to life, as A) it make no sense and B) it's pretty morally wrong and in my opinion the JL would never do that. At the end of Batman v Superman, Clark Kent is in his coffin, being lowered into the ground and buried. Before the film cuts to its end you see gravel and soil being levitated slightly above the coffin as if there is a huge force underneath it. To comic book fans we know this to indicate that Superman is still alive and is in his hibernation before he comes back. I think Zack Snyder (the director) forgot about this completely and disregarded the fact that we would remember this little detail that was so significant.

Instead, they decided that getting the Flash and Cyborg to dig up his dead body to then bring it back to life Frankenstein-style was the best option. There have been many portrayals of the return of Superman after his death. Most go about the same way. There is some sort of chaos within Metropolis, usually involving Lois Lane (his love interest) and due to his super hearing ability he wakes up and breaks himself out of his coffin where he is then revealed to be in his infamous black suit. Then he gets to saving the day. This way about it brings back hope to the characters within the movie and also the audience. In my opinion this would have been a more suitable approach to the character. It would also have gone along with the piece of storyline they are working with where 'Lois is the key' to everything to do with Superman.

My last negative is the villain. Steppenwolf was an amazing choice for the big bad in this storyline. He is the window to the world of Apocalypse, where the Justice League's main villain Darkseid resides. Going into the movie fans expected us to branch into that world, however Darkseid was mentioned once. This was a missed opportunity. My main gripe is the fact that the character himself was full CGI. This made it look like a video game. Marvel have managed to get away with full CGI characters as their quality is far greater than DC's. DC did this with Wonder Woman and Suicide Squad (leaving out BvS because Doomsday had to be CGI) and it ruined the films. They could have easily have gotten Ciaran Hinds (the actor behind the voice) in a motion capture suit if they wanted to do CGI, or they could have easily have made a suit for him that they adjusted in post production. It took away the 'realistic' tones that they are wanting to go for with the DCEU.

Back to the positives. The scene that Wonder Woman is introduced into the film is the best 50 seconds of my life. The choreography for her fighting scenes are just amazing and make you want her to beat the hell out the bad guy. Her movements are flawless and powerful, and so so badass. She gives you hope throughout the whole film. They have learnt from theWonder Womanmovie that fans love her, they placed her very much at the centre of the film alongside Batman. Bruce Wayne himself was one of my favourite parts of the film. We all love Batman, it's hard not to. Ben Affleck is such a good interpretation of the character. He brings that suaveness of Bruce with the sternness of Batman as soon as he puts the cowl on. Again they have given him subtle comedic parts, especially between him and Superman after the events of BvS. I am not a huge fan of Superman, to be honest. I find his character drab and boring, that's all I am going to say.

All in all I loved the film. It was what we wanted, not another bad DC film. I was so happy to see the easter eggs (but Darkseid would have been better), but most importantly I was happy to see a huge part of my childhood being brought to the big screen in such an amazing way.

Now I just have to wait for Infinity War...
