Kingsman 2: The Golden Circle is a 2017 action film with a bit of a James Bond vibe. In the movie, the Kingsman are a group of secret government agents who are sworn to protect the world from evil. They use code names based off King Artur characters, giving them a bit of historical class. In most situations, they handle some of the most dangerous and difficult missions which require special training and skills.

We first met the Kingsman in 2014 with Kingsman: Secret Service and the second movie has been a much-anticipated follow-up to the epic first movie.

This franchise centers on Eggsy (Taron Egerton), a young street kid who stumbles upon a gentleman and soon finds himself being recruited into a secret spy organization. He must go through a series of special training, most of which he approached in a rather unorthodox fashion. However, it is that bravado and quick thinking which soon makes Eggsy the wonderful Kingsman he is now.

In this second movie, Eggsy once again is faced with having to save the world. The Golden Circle is a group of drug traffickers out to make a name for themselves, and Eggsy has to stop them before they can kill millions of people. I don’t want to give too much away though, you will have to see for yourself. However, Eggsy is also confronted with some rather personal trials. He is in love and has developed close friendships and bonds with people he did not have in the first movie. It is the mix of duty and personal hardship that shows growth in this once street punk character.

What I Liked

I went into the movie with high expectations and was certainly pleased that the second movie kept with the feel of the first. There was a wonderful mix of intense action scenes, comedy, adult humor, and drama which gave the movie a very balanced feel. I’m not always big on action movies, but this one certainly has something for everyone.

Seeing the character of Eggsy grow was also a wonderful thing. I was glad he has become more of a man and fallen into his role of Kingsman so well. He certainly shows that he is more than a street kid and will be able to be a proper man one day.

The villain is also cute and corky, something this franchise is starting to be known for. Julianne Moore, who plays Poppy, certainly captures that mix of cute and sweet combined with vicious and crazy, making Poppy a character you will love to hate.

The addition of the Statesmen, who are the American version of the Kingsman, was also interesting. Seeing the way the two groups are both similar and different was nice, and I enjoyed seeing the two groups both work together and clash at times.

What I Didn’t Like

There was something about this movie which I just can’t put my finger on. However, it just was not as good as the first. I don’t know if the villain was too predictable, or if the action was too similar. However, there was definitely something that made the movie not as good, not to say it was a bad movie by any means. I would certainly go and watch it again. Of course, it could have been I went in with such high expectations. Whatever the case may be, while the movie was wonderful, it certainly doesn’t match up to the first movie.

My Overall

Overall, I enjoyed the movie and would watch it again. It may even be fun to watch the two movies back to back to get the full effect. I would give it an overall score of 8.5/10.
