There is still a bit of a wait before Fox's Gotham batarangs back onto our screens, but the gritty detective/superhero hybrid has left more than enough clues to keep us guessing ahead of Season 4. Bruno Heller's #Batman prequel cleverly focuses on the earlier days of Gotham city and a young #BruceWayne before he dons the cowl.

Moving the action away from Wayne Manor, #BenMcKenzie’s Jim Gordon is the center of the piece, and we chart his days surrounded by a criminal web that includes the likes of Penguin, Riddler, and maybe even Joker himself. Away from the hype of The CW's shows like Arrow and The Flash, Fox takes #Gotham on an altogether more brooding journey in line with its Batman backstory, and now, we get a first look at its grittiest chapter yet. Season 4 of the show certainly hints that we are moving into an even darker phase for Gotham City and its unsavory underbelly.

Bat'll Do, Bat'll Do

Picking up after the explosive Season 3 finale, Gotham is back with a whole new host of bad guys — including Ra's al Ghul — but should we also expect to see the birth of Batman this time around? Dealing with the madness and murders of last season, the subtitle for the Season 4 is "Dawn of Night." Alluding to a grown up Bruce and Gordon's rise through the GCPD, TV Insider gives us a first look at the poster. If you are a fan, the artwork will be available as a souvenir from Fox Booth #4229 during this year's San Diego Comic-Con.

The poster show's McKenzie’s Gordon watching over David Mazouz’s Bruce Wayne/Batman, just as he watches over the Gotham skyline. With his coattails flapping in the wind, it is easy to see how the poster foreshadows Bruce's eventual evolution into the Caped Crusader, but with Gotham's USP being the lack of Batman, don't expect the transition to happen overnight. Although Gotham may be notorious for changing the origins of some of DC's best-loved heroes, expect Bruce's move to masked vigilante to be a pretty standard affair.

While the plot of Season 4 remains a mystery, the close of Season 3 queued up Ra's and the League of Shadows, as well as the possible introduction of Harley Quinn. We have been waiting a long time for the Clown Princess of Crime to pop up, while showrunners have teased her imminent arrival. Although Mazouz's character is becoming more prevalent in the world of Gotham, you can't help but feel that Bruce isn't quite ready to step into the black suit just yet. We don't know what the endgame is for the show, but expect the final form of Batman to be a pretty major part of it.

Although Mazouz himself won't be attending Comic-Con due to filming, the expo looks to shed a little more light on the Dark Knight. Those in attendance will be privy to an all-star Q&A and an exclusive first look at the new season ahead of its September 28 return. They say that the darkest hour is always before the dawn, so expect Gotham to be in for a particularly dark run for Season 4!
