Loki

Loki's Girlfriend

I was at work one day, I work at a small coffee shop in New York. It was a pretty normal and slow day until they walked in: Thor and Loki. Thor was talking about a mile-a-minute to Loki about what I assumed was their last mission; and Loki was listening, but also had a bored look on his face. He was clearly not as excited about what Thor was saying as Thor was. When they got to the counter, I had the honour of serving them. Thor ordered a double macchiato with a double shot of expresso. Loki ordered a black coffee. As I placed their order, I saw that Loki was holding a book, it was Hamlet by Shakespeare. “I love that book," I said to Loki. Loki looked at me with curiosity and I continued talking since there was no one in line behind them. “Shakespeare is one of my favorite authors. If you like Shakespeare’s Hamlet, you should try Kenneth Branagh’s Heart of Darkness. I think you’ll find that it is intense and compelling. It looks into the darkest recesses of human nature. It takes the reader through a horrific tale in a very gripping voice.” He never once said anything while I spoke; he just looked at me. When they called his name to pick up his coffee he kind of nodded and said, “Thank you.” He then took his coffee and left with Thor, who seemed to be teasingly shoulder-bumping Loki. The rest of my day was relatively boring compared to that.

A week went by before I saw Loki again. He walked up to the counter and smiled, then thanked me for the book recommendation while he ordered his coffee. Over the next couple of weeks, Loki came in for a coffee every day. He has begun sitting at the coffee shop while he drank his coffee and read his book. I would refill his coffee and we would small talk shortly about different books and authors. He even took a recommendation of a newer author and even liked it. Loki is very intelligent, and it was fun talking with him. For a God, Loki was down to earth.

After a couple of weeks, he came in one day just as I was finishing my shift. I greeted him and apologized because I would not be around for our usual chats. He ordered his black coffee as usual but also ordered a hot chocolate this time. So, I placed his order and told him I’d see him later as I was done my shift. I walked out back to clock out and get my things as I headed out the front doors. Saying goodbye to my co-workers, I scanned the room for Loki but he wasn’t there. As I exited through the front door, Loki was standing there, with one arm stretched out, handing me the hot chocolate he had just bought. I was taken by surprise and it must have showed on my face because he said, “You did say you liked hot chocolate, right?”

“Yes,” I answered. “Sorry, I just wasn’t expecting you here handing one to me.”

“I thought since we wouldn’t be able to have our usual chat while you were working, maybe you might join me in the park for our daily conversation?” Loki said with a smile. And such a sweet smile it was.

“I’d love to,” I said while accepting the hot chocolate. We walked to the park where we found a bench to sit on and we talked for the rest of the afternoon. And that’s how Loki and I started dating.
