Major Differences Between Movie and Book

'The Duff: Designated Ugly Fat Friend'

While books are often being made into movies and TV shows lately, during the process things are often changed or just plain left out. In this case the book version and movie versions of The Duff are completely different. It's hard to believe the movie is even based on the book. In the book, our main character Bianca Piper lives with her dad and mother, though her mother is gone most of the time traveling as a motivational speaker, thus leaving Bianca to pretty much be raised by her father who is an ex-alcoholic.

However, that isn't even the start of her problems. Her best friends Casey and Jess in a way are linked to her personal destruction, having been the secret girlfriend of one her friend's brothers when he, in fact, had a public girlfriend (that Bianca didn't know about). When said brother is coming back into town, that leads to a huge communication problem.

To add to her problems with her friends, her mother files for divorce and her dad starts drinking again, which is really when Wes enters the scene. It starts as a class project but turns into something more, secretly—'til one night when all her secrets come out and Bianca tries running from her life yet again.

Now in the movie they make the book pretty PG, having the main cause of all Bianca's problems being that Wes called her a duff at some party and she felt inferior to not only her friends but everyone. So she goes on a mission to change who she is to get some guy, enlisting the help of Wes by helping him with science, only to fall for Wes and get him to leave his (horrid) girlfriend for her.

While the movie was decent I feel it is important to read the book the movie is based on. Yes the book does have a lot of sex and other harsh truths, but it is a more real and honest story. Although the falling in love piece doesn't happen every day, the book does make you see the beauty in the way Wes and Bianca are with each other. One thing is for sure, BOTH have advantages to your entertainment. With either the love story and overcoming of obstacles in the book or the harsh truth that there will always be someone better than you are in some way that the movie gives you, you will enjoy them immensely.
