The Dancing Queens (And Kings) of Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again

Mamma Mia! There is a sequel to the 2008 ABBA-tastic movie version of the beloved musical Mamma Mia! Mamma Mia centers around a young woman by the name of Sophie who is about to get married. She invites three men to the wedding. One of these men is her father. But who? How will she tell her mother, Donna, that she invited them before the wedding becomes too hectic? Starring Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan and multiple other well known faces, Mamma Mia is a fun, entertaining, and comedic musical.

Ten years later, a sequel spawns! What could this be about? Five years after the awkward mix up of fathers, Sophie is getting ready for a celebration of the reopening of her late mother's hotel. Yes, Meryl Streep lovers, Donna has sadly passed away. I was not expecting that part.

However, this story does center around Donna. A young Donna. Viewers follow her and her wacky, energetic best friends from her youth, to meeting the three men, and traveling around Greece before making plans to set up the hotel. Young Donna is performed by Lily James. James has been seen in multiple movies such as the title role of Cinderella in the 2015 film version, the television British series, Downton Abbey, and even in the theatre as Juliet in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. James shined as Donna bringing out emotion, spunk and a talented voice singing out “I Have a Dream.”

Playing young counterparts of the three famous men, Sam, Bill, and Harry, are Jeremy Irvine, Hugh Skinner, and Josh Dylan who all do a splendid job capturing their adult actor counterparts. Hugh Skinner as Young Harry was a delight to watch. He has some well acted one liners. Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again never loses its comedic touch.

As skeptical as I was about a sequel to Mamma Mia the film actually surprised me. Everyone knows the story of Mamma Mia and the famous songs created by ABBA. Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again is something new and different for fans.

Although Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again is Streepless the film does give viewers a heartwarming cameo. I won’t tell you when it happens. I believe that films are meant to surprise audiences. Some may only watch films once. Others will watch a film dozens of times. I am that person who enjoys watching certain films many times. On each watch there is something different that you never noticed on the first watch.

While young Donna has the audience on her journey, Sophie is feverishly preparing for the reopening of the hotel. Sophie has grown in the last five years as has each character. Still, Donna’s energetic light is felt through the movie as she passes it to her daughter, her lifelong best friends, and…her mother.

Would you like to know who Donna Sheridan’s mother is? Cher! Yes, the ‘Goddess of Pop’ is revealed to be Donna’s mother, Ruby. This is where my mixed reaction comes. Cher is a talented actress, and singer, but did she really need to be Donna’s Mother? Was it necessary to have Donna’s Mother show up?

Still, you do have to watch it to listen to Cher sing ‘Fernando.’

In my opinion, the film would have been better off without Ruby’s character. Mamma Mia is about Donna and Sophie and how they’ve overcome their obstacles. That’s what young Donna embraces. She came from a difficult past and wanted to get away from it, still the obstacles follow her. No matter what bad events happen one has to think positive. That’s an inspiring message from this film.

I recommend Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. It’s worth seeing to share one last song with our favorite characters and dance along with our favorite dancing queens.
