San Diego Comic-Con 2017 is in full swing, and Marvel fans are reveling in it. Sure, the high point is going to be Saturday's Marvel Studios panel at Hall H, but in the meantime Marvel has a lot of treats in store for its fans. Take, for example, a poster that's available from Marvel's booth:

Here's another look with a slightly better angle of characters at the top:

The poster carefully shows as many key faces as possible, and it's done a lot better than the awkward one we saw for Spider-Man: Homecoming. And yet, here's the thing; it doesn't show all of the main names. Frankly, some of the character choices are very surprising indeed; we get Don Cheadle's War Machine rather than Chris Hemsworth's Thor, for example. So, while the poster clearly carries the influence of the marketing department, it also seems to be offering tantalizing hints at which characters will play major roles in Avengers: Infinity War.

Decoding The Poster

No surprise, Robert Downey, Jr.'s Tony Stark takes center-stage; we'd expect nothing less. He's joined by a much more intriguing group, though. You have three members of the Guardians of the Galaxy; notably, the female members, not Chris Pratt's Star-Lord. Given the #MCU's heroes are going up against Thanos, it makes sense for both Zoe Saldana's Gamora and Karen Gillan's Nebula to play major roles in #InfinityWar.

Pom Klementieff's Mantis joins them in the spotlight, suggesting that the character may be more important than we first thought. The Infinity War teaser at the D23 Expo last week had made some fans realize just how few female heroes Marvel Studios has actually developed over the last decade, and it's pleasing to see the women given such a prominent place in this first poster.

The poster then highlights three of the newer additions to the MCU; Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange, Tom Holland's Spider-Man, and Chadwick Boseman's Black Panther. Given Doctor Strange actually possesses an Infinity Stone, it's no surprise that set photos have suggested he plays a major role in the film.

Meanwhile, casting announcements have suggested that the Black Panther's nation of Wakanda is an important part of Infinity War too, and the D23 footage has even led some fans to speculate that the Soul Stone is hidden in the fictional African country. While there's no tie between Spider-Man and the Infinity Stones, the MCU looks set to become fairly Spider-centric once Infinity War and Avengers 4 are finished, so we'd kind of expect to see him on the poster.

Finally, you have the really surprising additions: the Hulk in the background, Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye, Sebastian Stan's Winter Soldier (with a new cyborg arm, possibly made of vibranium?) and Don Cheadle's War Machine. We've actually been getting intriguing hints that Infinity War would feature ongoing stories for some of these characters. Ruffalo recently noted:

“There’s a huge change for Banner and for Hulk. It isn’t resolved in the first Infinity War, it sort of culminates into the second Infinity War. Thor 3 is the beginning of a lot of changes for Banner and for Hulk.“

While he's being reticent, Cheadle is choosing to be a lot more open. For his part, he said:

“Obviously at the end of Civil War, with what happened with War Machine, Rhodey’s character has a lot to overcome. There’s a progression to the movies, without being specific and telling you what it is, there’s a progression and he gets back up.”

It's clear Marvel is playing the long game, which means bringing Hawkeye out of retirement in Captain America: Civil War was also a very deliberate move, setting up some sort of overarching narrative for the character.

This poster isn't just a mash-up of marketable characters; it's a hint at just which heroes may play a major role in Infinity War. Pleasingly, given female characters are particularly prominent, it suggests that Infinity War may shine a spotlight on the five female superheroes Marvel Studios will have introduced by the end of the year. It also suggests some of the MCU's secondary characters, including War Machine and Hawkeye, are about to get some intriguing character arcs.

Here's the interesting question, though; will this be the only Infinity War poster we get? In the past, Marvel has released a stream of interlocking posters — most notably when advertizing Avengers: Age of Ultron. Will they do the same here? Will we get another poster featuring Josh Brolin's Thanos and his allies, and another with Chris Evans's Steve Rogers in center-stage? We'll find out tomorrow.

If you're at #SDCC2017, don't waste any time — get down to the #Marvel Studios booth before stocks run out!
