Meet George Jetson Again: 'Sausage Party' Director Set to Lift off with Family-Friendly 'Jetsons' Movie

For all those desperately wondering what everyone's favorite futuristic family — the Jetsons, obviously — is up to, look no further! The director responsible for last summer's #animated food orgy has you covered.

Warner Animation Group is set to bring a film adaptation of the classic Hanna-Barbera #television series to the big screen. Conrad Vernon, best known for directing the ridiculously successful R-rated Sausage Party, is set to develop (and possibly direct) the animated film. Vernon is a veteran when it comes to handling animated properties with such co-directing credits as Shrek 2, Monsters vs. Aliens and Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted under his belt. Not to mention, providing the voice of Gingy in the beloved #Shrek films.

Although an animated film adaptation of The Jetsons was released in 1990 with Jetsons: The Movie, it performed poorly at the box office and critics panned it. Famed critic Roger Ebert named it as one of the 10 worst films of that year. Jetsons: The Movie was the last official Jetsons production until the 2017 direct-to-video animated film The Jetsons & WWE: Robo-WrestleMania!

A live-action adaptation of The Jetsons has never seen the light of day despite numerous fan attempts at dream casting. Warner Bros. has definitely sought to create a live-action feature since the 1990s due to the incredible success of Universal's take in 1994 with The Flintstones, which grossed more than $341 million on a $46 million budget. The two franchises previously crossed over in the 1987 TV movie The Jetsons Meet the Flintstones:

The Jetsons aired for three seasons and focused on the various hijinks and misadventures of the Jetson family: father George, housewife Jane, teenage daughter Judy and young son Elroy. Rosie the robot also appeared — and lest we forget Astro, the family dog. Regardless how familiar one is with the property, virtually everyone on Earth knows the stupendously iconic opening theme song that introduces the family with every episode:

For now, the Vernon-helmed Jetsons will take the animated route — however, never count out Hollywood's thirst for live-action nostalgia properties.

Conrad Vernon is clearly a talented individual who will hopefully be able to bring this beloved property back to the forefront. The series remains surprisingly contemporary despite it airing over 50 years ago by predicting numerous futuristic technologies including LCD TVs and video calling. Since it is early in development, a release date and synopsis is not yet provided.
