Ever since X-Men blew up in the cinema in 1999, many studios have green lit a number of comic book adaptions that have quickly become the most anticipated comic book movies. It is no surprise that DC and Marvel lead the pack and have consistently delivered faithful, and sometimes not so faithful, movie adaptions that bring out the best and worst of the critics and fans. These movies have been the staple for the summer box office, and the offerings don’t seem be stopping any time soon. Thanks to these movies, everyone knows at least a handful of comic book super heroes, and they are clamoring to see them—and Batman—fight the bad guys. From the upcoming Spiderman Homecoming to The Justice League and all the way to Deapool 2, we will take a look at some of the most anticipated comic book movies.

Batman is one of the darkest heroes. His amazing agility and smarts can outwit any villain, even the super powered ones. This is why his movies are among the most anticipated comic book movies. It goes without saying that a man who dresses as a bat has mental issues, his brooding personality doesn’t help much either, but can he be funny? That is what fans found out in The Lego Movie. Now the man has his own solo Lego movie and fans couldn’t be more excited to see Batman (Will Arnett) take on the Joker (Zack Galifianakis) in spectacular Lego fashion. He is aided by Robin (Michael Cera) and Alfred (Ralph Fiennes).

With plenty of movies about the Greek and Egyptian pantheon of gods, Thor is a welcome addition featuring Norse gods. These gods are not supernatural as they are in some of the legends, but are advanced alien race from another realm. Thor is the God of thunder and with his trusted hammer, he is part of The Avengers. His first outings had a luke warm reception that made it seem as if his story was not being taken seriously and people have been waiting for thunder god’s chance to show his stuff. Well, that is about to change with Ragnarok and this ramps up the anticipation factor to the max. Also, fans get to find out why the god of thunder was absent in Civil War. Add the fact that he will team up with the Hulk, for an inclusion of the Planet Hulk storyline, and this becomes an even more exciting entry into the most anticipated comic book movies.

Avengers: Infinity War

One the best franchises from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) about a team of heroes led by Iron Man. People usually go out in droves to watch earth’s mightiest heroes and battle the next big threat. Infinity War pits them against Thanos, who is a baddie on a galactic scale, and this has got many geek radars spinning waiting for any news on how many Marvel characters will join the fight. What adds to the anticipation is that they get to find out how Cap and Iron Man sort out their beef after the events of Civil War. Besides that drama, the huge assemble of the biggest marvel heroes that can possibly show up for this fight is its biggest draw.

Fans and critics have been waiting a while for DC to catch up to Marvel’s impressive movies, which is why Justice League is among the most anticipated comic book movies. Fans got to see Batman and Superman duke it out, and it wasn’t that great. Critics were largely unimpressed and fans were divided. But the teaser trailer for this movie gave everyone some hope. We got to see Batman round up the team and the tone has shifted incredibly from the joyless Batman V Superman to something lighter in tone and a bit more humorous—thanks to The Flash. This one is building up momentum nicely and DC might just have a winner.

Spider-Man: Homecoming

When news broke out that our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man would get another re-boot, people were not so excited. But that all that changed when it was announced that he was joining the MCU in order to take part in Infinity War. Needless to say that fans could barely contain their excitement. Spider-Man (Tom Holland), made his debut earlier on in Civil War. Now he also has his own solo outing in 2017, with Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) making an appearance and facing off against the Vulture (Michael Keaton). People can’t wait to see how Marvel will treat Spidey now that they have in the MCU where everyone feels he belongs.

Wonder Woman is a warrior princess from an all-women Amazonian tribe. Armed with a sword, shield, and the Lasso of Truth (anyone roped by it will instantly tell the truth), she fights for justice. And she just also happens to be a member of the Justice League. Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) was the surprise highlight in the otherwise critically panned Batman V Superman. Her solo film will be the next entry in the DC Extended Universe, where she will try to stop the World War. This is after meeting a pilot (Chris Pine) who has crashed landed on the island where she has lived a sheltered life free from the problems of the world of man. Fans were also surprised that the actor managed to pull off such an excellent portrayal of Wonder Woman and this has made her solo film rank among the most anticipated comic book movies. Fans also want to see if DC has learned from its mistakes, since they haven’t been able to make a movie that resonates with critics and brings out the fans to support them.

Black Panther

Blank Panther is an Avenger and a diplomat from the African nation of Wakanda, who dawns a power suit made of his country’s most precious resource: Vibranium. Black Panther’s (Chadwick Boseman) appearance in Civil War was a treat for fans, especially since he makes the Avengers a more rounded team in the comic books. The fact that his solo outing will be set after the evens of Infinity War means that they don’t have to bother telling an origin story and the film can just get right to the action. Featuring a talented cast and set entirely in Wakanda, fans are hoping to see the Black Panther in his element, fighting off poachers and defending the Vibranium. Since Wakanda is also one of the most technologically advanced nations in the Marvel world, many fans could not be more excited to see how this will be envisioned.

Fantastic Four 2

The Fantastic Four is a team of super heroes who got their super powers when they were hit by a cosmic storm in outer space. This team, consisting of Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman, The Human Torch, and The Thing, constantly faces of with their arch nemesis, Doctor Doom, who also got hit by the same storm. The movies haven’t always been well received, but something went horribly wrong with the last movie, which was also supposed to serve as reboot to the franchise. This time the heroes got their powers from an alternate universe. It was dark, humorless, and devoid of anything fun for fans. It actually made the previous franchise look like a masterpiece. Now Fox has a chance to redeem itself. Despite a lackluster box office performance, a sequel was green lit and fans are watching this franchise with bated breath hoping they don’t screw it up further.

Doctor Strange is known as the sorcerer supreme and the master of the mystic arts in the Marvel universe. He used to be an arrogant surgeon who had to humble himself by learning the mystic arts from the Ancient One after a car accident ended his career. He initially set out to find a cure but instead opened a world beyond his wildest imagination, and also incredibly dangerous. Marvel has never done anything mystical but the results look promising based on the trailers. Benedict Cumberbatch, who is more than a terrific actor, will be bringing Doctor Strange to life, and fans were very happy with this casting. People are looking from some truly weird stuff from Marvel here, and we can only hope they deliver because this movie one of the most anticipated comic book movies of 2016.

Logan

Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), whose real name is Logan, is one of the most prolific characters in the X-Men universe and has managed to make an appearance in all the major X-Men releases. This will be his third standalone film, and following his underwhelming appearance in X-Men: Apocalypse, Wolverine hasn't been exciting many fans. Many are hoping this one will be something worth clawing of out bed for. Loosely based on the Old Man Logan story line, we see Wolverine retracting his claws for good, only to be brought back to the fight after his fellow mutants are being captured and experimented on. It will be exciting to see a slightly older and more mature Wolverine and the fact that this marks the final appearance of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine further heightens the anticipation.

Deadpool 2

Infamously known as the merc with a mouth, Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) is a highly skilled assassin with impeccable comedic timing, and fans were excited to him on screen in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. What they got instead was an empty shell of a character—they made it worse by shutting his mouth and give him heat vision (fans weren’t excited). Fox was kindly reminded that people wanted to see the real Deadpool and they waited. Since good things come to those that wait, fans got a standalone movie in 2016, and the movie was a hit. His sleek moves and signature breaking of the fourth wall spiced up an otherwise generic plot. Fans want to see more of the merc with a mouth, and Fox quickly green lit a sequel, which become one of the most anticipated comic book movies.
