My 'Daredevil' Season 3 Review

Daredevil is a really great character that I discovered around the time I entered university. A few years back, I got really excited when I heard about a brand new Daredevil TV series by Netflix. I wasn’t totally fond of the Ben Affleck movie that was made years back. I thought it was kind of flat and missed out on a lot of potential. It was almost like a made for TV movie. I loved Frank Miller’s take on Daredevil when I was first introduced to Daredevil and was hoping that the TV series would be able to take a page from his direction.

To my delight, Marvel was thinking the same thing and was able to please all of the Daredevil fans with their interpretation of Daredevil. The first season was a gritty retelling of how Matt Murdock gained his abilities. It talked about his personal conflicts when facing his opponents and the moral dilemma every time he made crucial decisions. It’s very much a great crime drama because it dives into everyone’s motivations and moral conflicts of the situations that unfold. The first season was a great intro that explains where he came from and introduced us to his friends Foggy and Karen Page.

I was a little worried for the second season because the first season built up such high expectations because of the great writing it produced. I didn’t want this to be another Heroes fiasco. I was worried that it wouldn’t meet my expectations. Luckily it surpassed my expectations by introducing the audience to a new conflicted enemy in the form of the Punisher and dived into the Hand organization. I found that the Punisher storyline was really interesting because the Punisher was pretty much similar to Daredevil but with a radically different moral compass.

I didn’t think they could possibly keep the momentum going with the third season but I’m glad to say that they did. I think Daredevil is the only Marvel series on Netflix that I will actually keep me glued to the TV and really binge watch. The cliff-hangers really got me and the third season was written very well. I love how they keep Hell’s Kitchen feel like a small town where everyone knows everyone. The mood and atmosphere hasn’t changed but yet the story still feels fresh regardless of the fact it’s basically following the similar story path as the first two seasons.

This third season opens up with new character development relationships between Foggy, Karen, and Daredevil. They all still care for each other but the common theme like pretty much all TV series lately is keeping their loved ones safe. We learn new secrets about these characters and I love the fact that the character progressions throughout the seasons aren’t lost. I felt like I’ve grown with the characters as I watched the series so I felt extra connected to these characters.

As per usual the first three episodes are the setup episodes. This season they wanted to remind me of what had happened in the first season because Wilson Fisk is once again the main antagonist season. They introduce new characters within the FBI. Without giving too much away I thought the character development for each of these characters was pretty well done. We understand their motivations and how everyone gets manipulated.

If you still haven’t seen Daredevil like many of my friends. I strongly suggest you give it a try. The first few episodes of each of the seasons are a little dry but they’re only giving you an intro to what’s going on. By the 4th episode things start ramping up and you’ll really start enjoying it. I would give season three of Daredevil an eight out of ten. It was formulaic but it was really good. They know their target audience and they really hit it home with this one.
