My MoviePass Review

You don't have to pay a fortune to see a movie every day.

The MoviePass program was first brought to my attention by my daughter. She told me it was something that her father and I might want to check out. We do enjoy going to the movies, so I took her advice. I did some online research and found that the MoviePass Company was founded in 2011. Apparently, it has been around for a while, so I was surprised I had not heard of this service before. I read some reviews about the program and found a mixed bag of reviews. Some individuals have found MoviePass to be an inexpensive way to see movies while others had complained about the service. The complaints were from people who claimed they had never received their passes or they had problems using the pass once they arrived at the theater. Being an optimist, I decided to take a gamble and go with the positive reviews. I went to their website and ordered two passes at $9.95 each.

Our MoviePasses arrived in the mail in under two weeks. To start using the passes, I had to download the MoviePass app onto our phones. A couple of days later, we decided to go see a movie at our local movie theater. When we arrived there, I discovered the MoviePass app on my phone would not display the location of the theater, so I could not check in. Feeling frustrated and no longer in the mood to see a show, we headed home. I started thinking maybe the naysayers were right and this deal was too good to be true. On the drive home, my daughter called to see how we had enjoyed the movie. I told her about the problem I had encountered while trying to use the pass. After some thought, my tech-savvy daughter asked me if the location device on my phone was turned on. Upon checking my phone I found my location app was turned off, so I promptly turned it on. Still feeling a little apprehensive, we went to the theater the next day to try again. To my relief, we did not encounter any problems. We attended an afternoon show which cost around nine dollars a ticket. This meant our MoviePass appts had just about paid for themselves.

We have now seen over 15 shows using our the MoviePass apps, so I feel knowledgeable enough to give some insight into the ups and downs of the program. The ups are, it's an inexpensive way to see movies. You are allowed to see one show per day as long as you are a member of the program. Another up is that many theaters still give you perks points if you have signed up for their perks program. We have enjoyed free hot dogs and popcorn with our perks points so far. If you acquire enough perks points, you can use them to purchase a ticket for a friend or family members ticket. The downs are you can't use your app to check in to a movie from your home. The rule is MoviePass holders have to be within 100 yards of the theater to check in. You then have 30 minutes to get to the box office to use the pass to purchase a ticket. Once you have accomplished all the aforementioned prerequisites, you are free to sit back and enjoy the show.

We have had a lot of entertainment using our MoviePass apps. We think we have struck gold because of the low cost to see a movie. However, at the time of writing this article, I found out they have reduced the monthly cost of their pass. But in order to get the reduced price of $6.95, you have to buy a years membership. For the time being though, my husband and I are continuing with the monthly subscription rate we already have. My husband is not the eternal optimist that I am. He wants to play it safe and not invest a couple of hundred dollars upfront.
