My Review of 'Blockers'

A Teen Comedy Movie That Takes Today's Changes into Consideration

I saw the trailer for Blockers a while back and it seemed like a pretty juvenile concept. It looked like a typical teenager trying to lose their virginity movie. I don't remember being that interested in this movie when it first came out.

The movie was available to watch and I was in for some cheap laughs so I checked it out. This movie turned out to have a little more substance than I expected.

The movie is not actually about the teens that were trying to lose their virginity. The main characters in this movie were actually the parents. Lisa played by Leslie Mann, Mitchell played by John Cena, and Hunter played by Ike Barinholtz are three single child parents. Their children have been friends from childhood and are now in their teens just graduating high school.

All three of these characters have their own foibles and are dealing with parenting a little different from one another. Lisa is a single parent and stressed that when her daughter leaves for post-secondary school she'll be alone in the world.

Mitchell has raised his daughter to be strong and smart, but for some reason still doesn't trust her to make intelligent decisions on her own. He thinks that he still needs to be there to protect her.

Hunter is a party guy that's been recently divorced due to his own infidelities and wants to be part of his daughter's life again. He wants to make his daughter's day the best day that she could possibly have.

Their daughters make a collective pact to lose their virginity at prom and their conversation gets intercepted by their curious parents by accident.

Being the overbearing parents that they are, Mitchell and Lisa decide that they have to stop their children from having sex. Hunter is there to stop them from ruining the children's big day.

There's some fun moments in this movie, but I wouldn't say that this movie was hilarious from start to finish. It was entertaining throughout though. It just didn't have anything that made me laugh hard. There were many chuckles though.

They dive into different themes that older versions of this genre would never attempt. For example, one of the daughter's happens to be gay and she's trying to figure out if she should have sex with a guy to please everyone. She's also concerned about telling others who she is and doesn't know how to profess her love to a girl that she likes.

There's another daughter that just wants to make her first time having sex a magical moment and doesn't know about her future as she's going to a new school away from her mom.

Then there's another daughter that wants to have sex, but doesn't know when's the right time for her to have it. She's part of the pact more as a sisterhood solidarity pact.

The parents continually get into some messed up situations while trying to find their children to end their pact. You probably know where this movie is going to go and it does go there.

I think maybe the predictability may have ruined some of the laughter in the movie. Some of the jokes came with such heavy-handed setups that it was kind of obvious what the punchlines were going to be. Despite this, the movie still has some moments—although in most cases they were forced.

The cast was generally a nice fit. At times it really seemed odd that John Cena was one of the parents, but the feeling goes a way after a little while. There are some moments that it comes back, but generally it doesn't take too much away from the movie.

Overall, I had an okay time with this movie, but it didn't really blow me away. I had a chuckle here and there and wasn't bored while watching it. I would not recommend this movie though. I think there are plenty of other quality comedies out there that you can watch instead of this movie. It had a great premise and great ideas, but the execution of the movie was a little flawed. I'll give this movie a six out of 10. You won't hate the movie, but you won't love it either.
