My Review of 'Game of Thrones' Season 8 Episode 3

The great war is upon us, and what a hell of an episode!

I was a little disappointed in episode 2. I knew they had to have build up episodes to get to the big battle against the white walkers. They only have six episodes though, how are they going to use two episodes as build up? Well, the people of Game of Thrones know what they're doing. Episode 3 was a hell of an episode.

There are a ton of mishaps that I think are totally nonsense but I'm starting to just accept the craziness that is Game of Thrones. I keep telling myself it's a fake story—nothing in this has to make sense. They're just telling a story, try to have fun with it. I definitely had a ton of fun in this one. There was a little bit of everything in this episode.

So everyone's up in the front line waiting for the white walkers to come. Bran is up in the back as bait with Theon as his bodyguard. We're already groaning about that because Theon is probably one of the worst bodyguards he could have. Sansa, Varys, Gilly, and Tyrion are in the crypt away from all the danger.

The episode starts with a lot of anticipation. You can see the worry in everyone's eyes and we as audience members are salivating at the fact the big war is about to begin. Finally after seven seasons we're going to see the big war. We have Lady Brienne, Tormund, Jorah and Grey worm at the front. It's a build up reminiscent of Dragonball Z like I mentioned. I started to lose hope thinking that the episode would be more build up because of the spacey stares from each of the characters of the show. Is this going to be the whole episode?

Then out of nowhere a shadowy figure arrives. Who the heck is this? Melisandre the Red Witch! She's been missing for a couple episodes and we were wondering where she was. Since she's been absent for a while she has to be important to the episode and boy was she ever.

You can see Davos going bonkers because she's come back after he's told her to stay away or he'll kill her. Before he could get to her she goes up to the Dothraki and gives them all freaking flaming swords! It looked like the most savage army in the seven kingdoms just got light sabers! At this point I'm freaking out. How the? What the? No way! Okay! Let's go with this! They send those crazy Dothraki out to get the white walkers with Jorah leading the way. Almost immediately they get decimated by the horde of undead.

The morale of the huge army at Winterfell suddenly dropped tenfold. I'm even in disbelief that their army could be extinguished so quickly. It was a cool effect with the light. It really emphasized the swiftness of their demise. The roaring flame that was quickly extinguished in the night.

One of the craziest things was that Jorah survived this horrific incident. I was like, "get the heck out of here." How the heck could this guy come galloping back?

The white walkers continue their relentless rampage toward Winterfell. This time Lady Brienne, Jaime, and Tormund are on the front line. Jorah somehow has the strength to continue fighting with them. This turns out to be just a train wreck. The horde of white walkers is just too much and overwhelm them. You could see some of them just ripping people apart. It's all fast and frantic but it's really entertaining to watch. At one point, Lady Brienne was taken by the walkers and it looks like they're tearing her apart. They don't really explain how but she survived the ordeal.

There's a lot of that in this episode. A lot of the characters look like they're done for but miraculously survive. I think it's a bit of a cop out but I guess they need the characters for later. I don't know. The inconsistency was driving me nuts with the episode. Also, the quick flashes of actions scenes at times were a bit disorienting and confusing. I have to watch this episode again because of all the jumping. I need to make sense of it all.

Anyways they all decide to retreat into Winterfell. The Unsullied protect the people retreating. Grey Worm again was on the front lines and then ended up in the back watching his people die.

Melisandre again comes to the rescue. Apparently they had made a wall of fire but needed Daenerys to get her dragon to blow fire on the wall to activate it. The Night King put up a huge winter fog so that she couldn't see Davos' signal. Melisandre creates the fire for them.

The Night King has tons of these walkers so he doesn't care—he'll just sacrifice his army to break through the fire and have them climb on top of each other to get to Winterfell. At this point I thought, "wow how the heck are they going to stop this guy?"

Jon and Daenerys use their dragons to fight the Night King and his dragon. Jon and the night king are downed after the big dragon wrestle. Incidentally the dragon air wrestling was awesome but again went so fast it's hard to tell what happened. There was a lot of neck biting that's for sure. I'm not sure if Jon's dragon is dead or not but it bit holes into the Night King's dragon. Daenerys is grounded as well.

There's a stand off with Jon and the Night King and I start thinking, "Okay, here it goes!" That's not how it went. the night king raises all the dead on the ground while Jon is running toward the night king. We don't get that one-on-one fight that we want. Instead, Jon is surrounded by new walkers. Since it's Jon I knew he'd be safe no matter how many walkers surround him. The guy is basically invincible.

Daenerys, on the other hand, is in trouble as she's surrounded by walkers as well. They quickly approach her but she's saved by Jorah. This guy is incredible. I was starting to think "he's invincible now" but then he gets stabbed by one of the walkers but yet survives to continue to defend his khaleesi. It was a cheeseball moment but I liked it.

With the Night King raising the dead he was able to raise the dead from the crypt where Sansa, Tyrion, and Varys are hiding. There's a bit of a scare for all of us there. I didn't know if one of them was going to die or not. Sansa and Tyrion have a tender moment together making us as audience members think there's a bit of ignition in the flame for those two.

Meanwhile the Hound is scared as heck. He's shown this before when he was fighting for Joffrey. He turned tail and ran. Same thing was starting to happen to him this episode until he noticed that Arya was in danger. That was a nice little moment to show that the time the two were together was not spent in vain.

Arya is running away from a ton of walkers. She's fought off a ton of them but it looks like she's finally getting overwhelmed. The Hound finally showed some heroism by saving her from the walkers. They hide themselves into a room that Melisandre was conveniently locked away in. The Red Witch gives Arya a much needed pep talk and we get pushed to Bran.

I don't know how but suddenly Theon becomes this great warrior. He's killed tons of walkers and defended Bran gallantly. To me this was pretty weird since he hasn't shown that he could do this ever. Meanwhile Bran is flying away as he warps into a raven. I don't really understand Bran's character or his actions. Again, I'm just going with it.

The Night King is finally there and Bran says to Theon, "You're a good man." At this point, me and pretty much everyone knows that Theon's going to die because that's all he wanted to hear. He goes charging at the Night King and obviously dies.

The Night King then goes for Bran and then out of nowhere a shadow attacks the Night King. I'm like what the heck? Yeah! Who is this? The Night King stops the assailant dead in their tracks holding them in a neck choke in the air. A sigh of despair comes out of me. The camera closes in on the face and it's Arya! I'm like no way! Good for you, Arya, but it's too late, he caught you. Then as she drops her knife it slows as if the Night King has won. She quickly grabs the knife with her other hand and stabs the Night King and the army of the undead are vanquished!

This episode had so many ups and downs. The intense moments were done so well. I only wished they'd slow down some of the fight sequences so that I could keep up with what was going on. Also the inconsistencies of how people could possibly get to one place to another in such a short period of time and the invincibility factor of certain characters was a bit confusing.

Now for the next episode. The war is over and the politics begin. The true game of thrones will finally conclude. Well the next episode will probably be a build up story again.

There are questions, though. Will Sansa and Tyrion be an item? Shouldn't Arya take the title as Queen of the North? Jon is probably going to be the ruler of the 7 Kingdoms and give Winterfell sovereignty. Now that Jaime and Tyrion have survived, is Bronn going to kill them? Has Cersei's plan worked? Most of Daenerys' army has been decimated by the army of the dead—she doesn't have much to fight with anymore.

Overall, I really enjoyed this episode. I liked it enough to ignore all of the crazy amount of weird inconsistencies and unexplained life saving escapes. I would highly recommend everyone that's watching Game of Thrones to watch this one but that's pretty much a given that they'll watch it regardless of my review. I give this episode an 8 out of 10.
