My Review of 'I Feel Pretty'

Not a masterpiece movie, but it is enjoyable nonetheless.

Amy Schumer is a controversial comedian and it seems like people are split on her. I don’t watch a lot of her movies, but I did enjoy one of her older movies called Trainwreck. It was enjoyable and that’s all I ask for in a movie. There wasn’t much to watch on Netflix and the movie I Feel Pretty popped up. I was tired of sifting through the different movies that I haven’t watched yet so I checked it out and I thought it was an enjoyable movie.

So, I remember seeing the trailer for this movie a long time ago. I thought it was an interesting concept. Something we’ve seen in other movies with a nice twist that I think worked perfectly for Amy Schumer. The concept is that the main character is living in New York and has a dream of working at some popular cosmetic company, but is stuck working in a rut of a dilapidated building. She doesn’t have much confidence in herself and it seems like she’s unhappy with her lifestyle. After some foreshadowing and some nods to previous movies with the same concept, she gets into an accident that makes her fall in love with her self image. Her life changes for the better with this newfound self-confidence, but nothing actually changes about her except for her outlook in life.

I thought this was an interesting premise that was very nicely played out. They dive into some interesting concepts about self-confidence and how it plays an important part of our lives. They also had really clever banter that unite the main character with her love interest. I really liked how they did it, because it shows that if we have positive outlooks in life we can change everything around and make things out for the better.

The movie for the most part is a 'play by numbers' movie that is predictable but still enjoyable. Amy Schumer is like-able throughout the movie, except for close to the end where they have to have a downturn for the main character. I understand her motivations and I see where she’s coming from so I can’t give her too much flack for what she did but it was really painful watching that part of the movie.

I’m not sure how well this movie did, but I think it should have done okay because it’s not a bad movie. The characters in the movie are like-able and there are clever concepts and jokes spread throughout it. There are a few things that happen in the movie that make you wonder what they were thinking. I didn’t watch a movie called I Feel Pretty expecting it to be thought provoking, so I had to accept some of the craziness so they could keep the story going.

Like I mentioned before, people are split when it comes to Amy Schumer. People either hate her or love her. I personally have no problems with her so I hope I have a non-biased view of her and the movie. Watching the movie, I also noticed that having someone in movies like Amy Schumer is a good thing because she does seem like someone you’d see in your day to day life. A lot of movies have model-looking women as the main character and I guess Amy can make the character seem more relatable. They kind of talk about those types of things in the movie.

Overall, it was a nice movie that you could watch on a lazy Sunday afternoon. I definitely wouldn’t have watched this in the theatre. It’s a great time waster if it’s playing on TV. If you have to get this movie get it on discount. I would give this movie a seven out of 10. The ending was uncomfortable to watch, but it’s supposed to be. I almost gave it a six out of 10, but I understand the motivations behind her actions.
