My Review of 'Letterkenny' Season One

You'll start watching this TV series wondering, "What did I get myself into?"

A group of my friends have been asking me to watch Letterkenny for a long time. They've always described it in the same way to me, "It's so stupid, but it's so good!" Well that sounds like its' right up my alley everyone!

Letterkenny is about a small Ontario town called Letterkenny. There's a few characters here that they'll focus on, but generally the main character of the series is Wayne, played by Jared Keeso. He's the head honcho of this small town as he's looked up to and just so happens to be the strongest fighter of Letterkenny. He's got two good friends: Dan, played by K. Trevor Wilson, and Daryl played by Nathan Dales. He's also got a promiscuous younger sister, Katy, played by Michelle Mylett. The four of them interact with the rest of the town and get into hijinks along the way.

One thing I have to warn people watching this show, is that all of the characters speak a mile a minute. It's so fast that you can lose a lot by not paying attention. It kind of reminds me of the way 30 Rock delivers a hundred jokes in a matter of a minute.

It is very clever and very funny at times. Yes, it is also sometimes pretty stupid. You'll wonder what you're watching at times and wonder if you're going to continue to watch it. The third episode was about creating a social network based on farts. Then there are amazing episodes like the, "super soft birthday," in episode two.

All of the characters are driven by obvious motivations. You start loving all of the quirks and personalities of each of the characters. All of the actors do a fantastic job working with one another and they are all hilarious.

This season goes by pretty fast and it's a very easy binge if you want to watch through it. Luckily, each of the episodes is only 25 minutes long and there are only six episodes within the season. This makes watching each episode very digestible and not so intimidating.

Not everyone will appreciate the humor though. There are some instances that you can see certain groups of people taking offense and I guess that's what you get when you feature stories from a small town.

They have Christian church situation that may make certain groups cringe. Then they have this drug addicted goth group that dances in random spots in Letterkenny that I thought was hilarious, but I can see people that identify with goth finding this offensive.

They focus a lot on the two hockey players: Reilly, played by Dylan Playfair, and Jonesy, played by Andrew Herr. These two are lovable, idiot hockey players. They play on all of the stereotypical hockey player tropes.

This series is definitely Canadian and it has tons and tons of references to Canadian culture. There are a lot of American references as well, but for the most part people that aren't familiar with Canadian culture may get lost in some of the banter that happen in the series.

Overall, my friends were right. I fell in the Letterkenny bandwagon. It was really enjoyable and fun to watch. I enjoyed it and would probably get others to watch it as well. I'll give the first season of Letterkenny an 8 out of 10.

I think that the next season will only get better, because the first season pretty much introduces the characters and their relationships with one another. The second season will be able to play around with the characters more as the audience will know the characters better. Bring on season two!
