My Review of 'Overboard'

A remake of an old 80s movie. Remakes are big right now, right?

I'm somewhat familiar with the old 80s Overboard movie but not really. I haven't seen it but I know it starred Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russel. After seeing this movie I think I get the gist of it.

I basically wanted to watch this movie because it starred Eugenio Derbez and Anna Faris. Earlier this week I reviewed a movie calledHow to Be a Latin Lover. I thought Eugenio Derbez was hilarious in that movie and was interested in this one because Anna Faris is really funny too.

So in this movie, Eugenio Derbez plays Leonardo Montenegro a rich playboy heir to the family business. This must be a theme for Eugenio to play a rich pompous arrogant man child because he plays a similar role in How to Be a Latin Lover. Anna Faris plays as Kate Sullivan, a single mother of three daughters struggling to go to school while working multiple jobs.

One of Kate's many jobs is a cleaner for a company that Leonardo had hired to clean his giant yacht. Things turn sour when Leonardo asks Kate to fetch him some snacks and she refuses, as it's not part of her job. She's had enough of his arrogance and wanted to make a stand. He fires her, pushes her off of the yacht into the ocean and throws her cleaning equipment in the ocean with her.

Naturally Kate's pissed at not only getting fired, but the way that he fired her. Plus, she has to repay the company for the damaged equipment that Leonardo had thrown into the ocean.

Not too long later, Leonardo's yacht sails into some turbulent waters. He's pretty oblivious because he wants to have sex with a supermodel. He runs out of condoms and looks all over the boat for a condom. He heads to the deck of the boat and finds some only to be knocked overboard and into the ocean.

He wakes up on the beach with amnesia. He's taken to the hospital and awaits someone to pick him up. Meanwhile, his sister Sofia, played by Mariana Trevino, wants to take over the family business, but it's promised to Leonardo due to the patriarchal system they're following. She finds out that Leonardo has amnesia and leaves him at the hospital. Her plan is to fake her brother's death, so that she can take over the family business.

Kate finds out that the same rich playboy that fired her, kicked her overboard, and left her with a huge bill is in the hospital. She wants to get him back by getting him to work for her. She gets fake ID's and fake pictures doctored so that everyone believes her story. From there on there's hijinks and some funny situations.

I thought this movie was a little uneven. You'll see Leonardo as this jerk and you still see remnants of it when he first has amnesia. His slip into a "nice guy" is so immediate. It's a little weird. He doesn't really gradually learn to become a new person it's almost immediate.

There are some funny scenes though. The two leads have some funny situations but rarely are they funny together. It's too bad because I thought the two of them could have riffed off each other really well. Their facial expressions and timing are pretty good.

Expect to see a lot of cheese ball moments. Even I thought some of it was a bit cliche. I'm usually a sucker for these things. Some of the plot was too conveniently laid out for the audience. It was to the point of the story being totally unbelievable. Well the plot is pretty unbelievable in the first place so I don't blame them for doing what they did.

The minor characters were crazily underutilized. For some reason they'd pick up on something interesting about a minor character and don't really do too much with it. These are things where you're like whoa, once he's rich he could possibly make their lives a lot better. Think of the possibilities. You'll see what I mean if you watch this movie.

Overall, was it enjoyable. I say there was very little in terms of entertainment. It dragged at times and the lead characters really had to carry the movie. Unfortunately, I probably wouldn't recommend this movie to others. I'll have to give this movie a 6 out of 10. It was a good attempt, but executed poorly. It's too bad, too, because they had a good idea and a good cast. I just wished it was written a little better and paced a lot better.
