My Review of 'Searching'

A twist to the thriller genre. Did their gamble pay off?

I've been waiting to watch Searching for a while. The movie captured my attention with the trailer. It was obvious that it was going to be a thriller movie, and because of that, I knew there was going to be a twist at the end. It seems to be a rule that there has to be a twist at the end of every thriller out there for it to be a proper thriller. I just wasn't sure what the twist was going to be, and that's part of the fun of these movies.

I think I first saw the trailer for this movie two years ago. At the time I don't think that John Cho was in a lot of things. He's a pretty good actor and I thought it was a shame that he wasn't getting anything. Then he popped up in a trailer for this movie. In the trailer, it looked like he was using his daughter's computer to help him find her.

That's basically the movie. There's a little bit more of a backstory, but that's the basic premise. John Cho's character David Kim is happily married with a daughter. Unfortunately, his wife dies from cancer and the only one left in his life is his daughter. Their relationship with each other seems to be eroding, but the audience isn't sure if it's because this daughter is going through adolescence or because they don't know how to deal with the loss of the mother. One day his daughter vanishes. He uses everything that he can to help the police find his daughter. He will use his own detective skills to help find her and go a little insane in the process.

The movie has a few fun plot devices to throw the audience off the path they initially thought the movie would be going. It's really fun when they try to throw the audience for a spin. What if it's the brother, what if it's the investigator, what if it's one of the daughter's friends?

This movie took me for a wild but fun ride. It kept me engaged from beginning to end. They placed the right amount of time into the backstory so that I could understand the main character's motivations and understanding of his daughter.

There's also an element of reality in this movie. While I was watching it I could see how some of the events that happen in the movie could have actually happened in real life. I think this allows the audience to be even more immersed into the story because they can identify with the situations that happen in the movie.

John Cho did a great job in this movie. He pretty much has to carry this movie because the majority of Searching is him looking through the computer for clues as to what has happened to his daughter. As an idea for a movie this is pretty risky.

He doesn't travel anywhere or actually have face to face meetings with a lot of the minor characters. A lot of the movie conversations were through telephone and FaceTime conversations over the internet. He is looking through old pictures and files that his daughter has on her social media and her accounts.

This might sound pretty boring, but they did it in a way that kept me engaged and interested in what was going on. For this, I commend them because that's a pretty hard thing to do.

Overall, I had fun with this movie and I would have to recommend it for people that are interested in mystery or thriller movies. It puts a nice spin on this classic genre and they executed it nicely. I would have to give this movie an eight out of 10. I'll likely rewatch this movie when I can so I can see the clues again.
