My Review of 'Shazam'

DC movies have definitely changed in a different direction. 'Shazam' looks and feels nothing like the others. How did it turn out?

Shazam is an interesting take on the comic book movie genre. I know I was really excited about it when I first saw a trailer of the movie last year. It seemed like DC was going into a totally different direction of where they had been going with the dark Justice League series. The trailer looked campy and fun and the movie, for the most part, lived up to the high expectations.

This movie is about a teenager named Billy Batson played by Asher Angel. As a very young child, he got lost at a fair. Billy was then put into foster care. Ever since then he's been running from foster home to foster home in search of his birth mother.

I'm not totally sure how it works but I guess at random Billy was chosen to go to this magical world where he meets a wizard by the name of Shazam, played by Djimon Hounsou. Shazam is at his last breath and Billy is basically his last hope to save the world from the seven deadly sins. The seven deadly sins are these monsters that represent the deadly sins and they've recently escaped and beat the crap out of Shazam. The old wizard doesn't have any more time so he bestows his great power to Billy.

What results is a pretty funny scenario with a teenage kid suddenly placed into a body of an adult with superpowers. This movie kind of reminds me of a cross between the movie Big, all the superhero movies and the Goonies. So that means that this movie is right up my alley. I guess DC wants to cut their losses and just pander to the trends lately. Films that have been following the Goonies formula have been doing great lately. We see this with movies like IT and Stranger Things.

Homages to the older movies are thrown in this movie in spades. They even have a piano scene reminiscent of the movie Big. They even throw in nods to the DC's characters like Batman and Superman. All of the nods that they provide are always in good fun and in a joking manner.

Although much of the movie is taken lightly there are some more emotional scenes that give the movie a little seriousness. Some of the scenes are a little forced but I get what they're trying to do. There are scenes closer to the end that were amazing. I can't go into too many details without spoiling it for everyone.

There are a lot of cameos in this movie. If you blink you might just miss them. I can't give it away but there's a few movies and TV stars from the 2000s that appear in the movie and I was so shocked to see them. It was a pretty cool blast from the past for me.

Overall, I think I'll give this movie a 9 out of 10 because I know I'm going to want to watch this again. It's definitely a purchase for me. There's so much fun and excitement in this movie that I don't think a lot of people will be disappointed when they get to watch this. I saw this movie in AVX 3D and I would say that it's not totally warranted to watch it in 3D or in AVX. Save yourself some money and check this movie out in standard mode.
