My Review of 'Spider-Man: Far From Home'

The second Spider-Man movie under the partnership of Sony and Marvel. It's also the first movie after the end of Phase three of the MCU. Here's what I thought.

I know there's a ton of expectations when it comes to Spider-Man: Far From Home. Its predecessor Spider-Man: Homecoming was very successful and critically acclaimed by pretty much everyone. To make matters worse for the filmmakers, Avengers: Endgame was a massive success. Movie goers standards are now extremely high.

From the movie trailers of this movie, it looks like it picks up right after the events of Avengers: Endgame. So I, like everyone else, was curious as to how they would explain some of the craziness that the citizens of this Marvel universe experienced.

The movie starts off explaining a lot of the questions that we had at the end of Avengers: Endgame. They talk about the Thanos finger snap, and the reemergence of all the lost individuals that were lost from the Thanos finger snap. Of course this is done in a fresh new way, since it's in the perspective of regular, ordinary people. They have no reference of Thanos or the craziness that had happened to get them back.

It looked like Peter Parker and all of his friends had disappeared during the "Blip," as they call it. Conveniently this allows them all to continue playing teenagers. It's funny because they all don't look like teenagers. They're probably all in their mid to late 20s.

So there's a European class trip for Peter and all his friends. Peter's looking forward to it, because he's been going through a lot of stress. His mentor had passed away, and he's constantly being bombarded with reminders of Tony Stark. He needs a rest from his superhero duties so that he can just be a kid again.

That's not how it works with superheroes though. I guess you don't get a day off if you're a superhero. Everyone keeps reminding him that he has to be a superhero no matter his reluctance to do it. The problem is all he can think about is professing his love for MJ.

When they get to Europe, they encounter a giant beast terrorizing Venice, Italy. A new hero emerges and saves the day. He claims to be a hero from another dimension. I thought it was fun that they play around with the different dimension idea as they did with the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse movie they did last year. Little did they know, but there's more than meets the eye with this new hero.

So this movie pretty much beat out all of my expectations, and I had high expectations for this movie. All my friends had already told me that it was good, and that usually sets the bar up high for me.

The cast was great, just as they were in the last Spider-Man movie. I don't think they utilized the supporting cast that much, but really it's not about them so I understand. They brought in nice additions to some of the comedy that was played out throughout the movie.

I don't think I had a moment of boredom in this movie. I was engaged from the beginning to the end. The last half of the movie was particularly exciting though. Without giving away too much, I have to say that the special effects close to the end of the movie were done so well. There's an element of illusion that's done so nicely that you really feel like you're in a mad house and you empathize with Spider-Man, as I felt like I was experiencing the same hallucinations.

This couldn't be done without some of the best special effects I've seen in superhero movies. I've always had this issue where some of the superheroes look like rag dolls or cartoons when the CGI effects kicked in. Throughout the special effect scenes in this movie I felt as though Spider-Man was a live person in a costume. There were a number of moments I was just in awe thinking, "I can't believe they pulled this off!" It really is a marvel to watch. You have to check this movie out in Imax 3d.

3D is a must for this movie. You have the usual people complaining that 3D is only good for the first few minutes, and then your eyes adjust and you don't experience it anymore. That's not the case in this movie. They have a lot of, "What the hell?" moments where you'll feel like you're flying through the air, or like things are coming at you. It's really well done and worth the ride.

Overall, I was really pleased with the movie. There's a ton of laughs and fun to be had here. I will definitely be picking this movie up when it comes out on Blu ray. I think this is a must watch for any Marvel movie fan. As movie on its own I would have to give this movie an eight out of ten, because you won't understand the Avengers movie references, and all the inside jokes throughout the movie. As a person well versed in the marvel universe I would give this movie a ten out of ten. Do yourself a favor and go watch this in the theatres.
