My Review of 'Stranger Things': Season 3

The kids on 'Stranger Things' are growing up so fast. Did this translate well into the third season of 'Stranger Things'? This is what I thought.

I realize that they have to churn out the seasons for Stranger Things pretty fast right about now. The kids are growing up and pretty soon you won't buy the fact that they're still teenagers anymore. I had an idea what they were going to do in this third season based on the previous season but it definitely did not go that direction.

In the last season they closed the portal to the dimension to the upside down. Hopper became the guardian for El and things were looking to be going well after that.

There's a few things that I thought were going to happen. In season 2 they talked about how there were other kids with powers just like El and they were scattered around. I'm surprised but they made no mention of this at all in the third season. It's as if that storyline was non existent. What the heck was the whole point of those episodes? Is it for season 4 of Stranger Things?

In a way I'm a little relieved that they didn't add that element to season 3 because I didn't really like that part in season 2. El is supposed to be the hero and let's just keep it that way.

Well they didn't really do that in this season as well. I understand that they were trying to explore each of the characters a little more to make them more fleshed out.

There are a lot of characters too. There are three main parties and they're pretty large parties and they all unite at the end. It was okay but it would have been more fun to see the dynamics of different characters interacting with one another.

As I mentioned before the kids are growing up and with that they dive relationships. Growing up and finding love. I don't know if this worked quite that well but it was a nice try. The kids at times got extremely annoying with their banter. They're teenagers, I get it. They're supposed to be annoying. I just found it grating.

As always, they paid homage to a few movies from the 80s. I had a chuckle every time the Russian agent kept coming in because it was definitely a shout out to Terminator. They even have the drum playing in the background when Arnold used to show up on the screen.

The plot of the season was reminiscent of the movie Red Dawn where teens infiltrate the secrets of Russian spies in a sleepy town of the USA. It was a total rip off but it was fun as well.

There were even shout outs to Back to the Future. The walkie talkie scene really killed me because that definitely felt like an interaction between Doc Brown and Marty.

There were numerous other shout outs that included TheNeverending Story, Aliens, pretty much any mistaken spy movie in the past, and several others.

I like what they did with some of the kid characters. I didn't like what they did with Hopper's character. He almost seemed too cartoony to me this season.

In the end they tried to simplify the story to be a little more similar to the first season. Some things worked and others didn't. I was hoping that this franchise would elevate itself by becoming more innovative and take more risks. It played it safe but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Overall, I enjoyed the season and closer to the end I felt it was binge worthy but it was kind of a slow start. You just have to kind of go with it to have fun with the season. I would have to give the third season of Stranger Things a 7 out of 10. There are a lot of misses that they could have capitalized on. They have a ton of material for season 4 so I'll keep my fingers crossed that they'll do it well.
